flu shot while pregnant?

what are you thoughts ladies? I am thinking of passing on getting it but my doctor makes me feel like I am a horrible mom for doing so!

Re: flu shot while pregnant?

  • I got both the reg and H1N1 after the first trimester with my daughter, since we fly/travel for the holidays....no harm done. From what I researched, high fevers aren't a great thing for fetuses.

That said, I have never gotten the flu shot otherwise...and its been 10years since I last had the flu. I don't get it for DD either now that she's over a year old. I think I'd do it again though if I had another.

  • I'm of the opinion that the flu shot is relatively harmless and the flu (especially for pregnant women and infants) is not.  I opted to get it both times.  Not everyone agrees with my above statement, but I have yet to hear of any stories of bad reactions to the flu shot itself, but have heard of pregnant women hospitalized or dying from H1N1 or other strain of influenza.  (waits for the stories to pour in of flu shot reactions)

  • A few of the women I worked with got the flu shot while they were pregnant and never regretted it.  Their Dr's were of the opinion that they were in the higher risk category of getting the flu, so they recommended it.  I get mine every year and have never had any problems, and all that is required by those that administer at our work place is a note from your dr saying you are okay to have it during pregnancy.

  • I was in your same boat. I felt pressured to get it. I did end up passing on it. On of the OB's at the clinic was very informative and helpful. Although he was not allowed to tell me not to get it, he suggested he didn't think it was needed ( this was at the H1N1 scare ). Do whatever you feel is right.

** edited - I should mention that I have a fear of drugs since having an allergic reaction to sulfa that caused liver damage. Ever since then, i'm scared to take even an Advil. There may have been more medical reasons for him to say that then I was aware of. I just realized that and didn't want to sway your opinion without having mentioned that. Sorry.

  • I am definitely getting it and so will my family.  I went into pregnancy with a slightly depressed immune system and getting very sick is a worry of mine; I'll feel a little more secure once I have it.

  • I don't recall ever getting the flu, but I've been hospitalized with pneumonia due to chronic bronchitis/asthma at least a dozen times in my life. I'm just really prone to respiratory infections in general, so I am getting the flu shot this year for the first time ever. They are offering needle-less injections in my area now, so I don't even have the excuse of hating shots.

My guy works on a huge construction site with literally thousands of other construction workers, so you know germs will be flying soon. Better safe than sorry....

  • I'm not getting it. I rarely catch a flu, and the one time I got a flu shot, I was feverish, fatigued, and had a rash around the injection site. My flus are always pretty mild, so the shot was actually worse than when I get the flu! I know my chances of getting a complication from the flu are higher now that I am pregnant, but I also know that if I react the same as I did the last time I got the shot, that might not be good for the baby, either.

  • I've gotten it each time. Request the mercury free version if you're worreid about the baby. Not everywhere has it. Our county usually has a special clinic day just for the pregnant woman.
