BFing/Pumping-NEWBORN??? HELP

Im due in 8 days and need some final questions answered! I plan on BFing and pumping. I plan on introducing bottles around 3 wks if of course BF is well established- if not I may wait till 6 wks. My question is besides reliving engorgement before a feed with the pump can I start building a stash by doing one pumping session of 15 mins 30-40 mins after I nurse lets say in the early am when i hear your supply is the highest? I know in the beginning you dont want an oversupply bc you dont want your tatas thinking you have triplets but will one pumping session do that?? Is it smart to pump one side while L/O nurses on the other or should i avoid that in the beginning in case he wants the other side-how often is it he'll nurse from the 2nd breast thats offered? HELP

  • If you don't need to pump in the beginning I wouldn't, you don't need the extra stress.  I started doing the pumping on one side while he nursed on the other in the morning once he started going a longer stretch at night.  For us that was about a month.

  • Don't start trying to build a stash right away.  Wait a few weeks so you can get the hang of BF and so that your LO can establish and regulate your supply.  After that I would pump an hour after the first morning feeding to start building a freezer stash.  I wouldn't pump while LO is nursing.

  • Lo always wants both sides. I started pumping atday 8 every few days. She took a bottle at 10 days because she got hungry while I was out. She was nursing well before that. Pumping gives you freedom.

  • I was advised to pump in the hospital (LO was there for 9 days and I stayed with him) by the lactation consultant. I don't remember why they originally brought me the pump (maybe to help my milk come in?), but I ended up having to pump so they wouldn't have to give him formula when they took him for his medication each day since they would have him a few hours at a time.

The LC at the hospital said to pump after he ate - choose one or two times a day and only do the pumping at those times to avoid over-production. I ended up deciding to EP after we came home from the hospital, but that was the advice given to me when I was still attempting to BF.
