Re: scared of my gd and pregnancy

  • Try to stick to the diet as much as you can.  Every doctor is a little different.  I don't know that McDonald's is absolutely forbidden, it depends what you eat and how much.  For instance, I found that I could eat a burger if I took the bun off and skipped the fries.  My DS likes McDonald's for breakfast.  i'll take him there occasionally and get an Egg McMuffin.  The salads with grilled chicken and the grilled chicken snack wrap are healthier, lower carb options.

If you're really craving something, it's ok to have a little bit, just try and fit it in the diet.  For instance, I occasionally like a little ice cream.  I'll have half a scoop with some peanut butter and it makes an ok evening snack.  If you're really craving something that has twice as many carbs as your doctor is telling you to eat in a meal, only eat half of it.

  •   There is nothing to be scared about, tons of woman go threw this and have healthy happy babies.

Your ok to have a indulgence once in a while, and it is okay to not eat as much as the dietician wants you to. When I was in my first trimester I lost weight cause I was always sick and throwing up what ever I ate. I am in my 3rd trimester now and because of were my lo is sitting, I bairly can eat with out feeling full a few bites into my meal. Spread it out, eat small meals around the clock.

Chicken nuggets are my go to food when I have to eat fast food, even McDonalds ones. My 2 year old loves Mcdonald, check the nutrtion guides, you can pull them up online and figure out what you can eat or not eat.

As for indulgening into a craving look for lower sugar and carb options. I get Ice cream made with splenda, and the grocery store near me has a huge section of sugar free, or low carb options. I have Pancake mix that has less then 11 carbs, and no sugar for serving and last night I had a bowl of rocky road Ice cream that was no sugar added and had some extra nuts sprinkled on top for protein and it was in my carb allowance.

One thing you will learn, is portion control, and educating your self on what your body can and can't handle. Take your DH with you, get books, get cookbooks, and you might find your self living healthier after gd then you were before.

  • I think the other posters said it very well.  There are a lot of things that you can fit into the GD plan as long as you watch your carb counts.  Indulging is fine in moderation, but try and get it to fit within the plan as much as possible.

As for eating "normally" every once in a while hurting your baby, if you blood sugars are all under control almost every meal and fasting, but you indulge, get a hot fudge sundae and spike, that singular incident is not going to really hurt your baby.  The worry is the high blood sugars over time that overfeed the baby.  This can cause low blood sugar issues for the baby at delivery (they produce their own insulin and will compensate for your high sugars - upon delivery, they still produce the insulin, but aren't getting your sugars anymore, so they drop really low) and eventually can have long-term effects for them like increased risks for diabetes and obesity.  A single high number is not going to do this.  But, again, if you need to indulge or go off plan, do it as infrequently as possible and go for the single scoop sundae instead of the giant one.

As for your hubby, have him try to follow the meal plan for a few days to a week.  He'll figure out what you are dealing with really quickly!  ; )

  • Its really all about portion control. I can pretty much eat what DH does and as long as I watch the carbs and add a ton of protein usually its not that bad. As far as mcdonalds goes also..i experimented yesterday and got a McChicken and just threw away the top bun and ate only a couple of DH's fries and it worked out fine1

Make Cheese and peanut butter your best friends :)

  • I know right now it seems very daunting, but it can be done (and I have the world's biggest sweet tooth).  GD saved me from gaining any weight past 28 weeks and I feel great (no swelling or anything!).  I like to eat a lot of:  peanut butter (especially on toast), Sargento cheese sticks, cheeseburgers (yes!), veggie sticks with ranch, Chobani greek yogurts, gingersnap cookies, strawberries or any other berries, Chickfila nuggets, grilled chicken salads, Kelloggs Protein Meal Bars, Zone Bars (strawberry yogurt is especially good), trail mix "Caramel Cashew" from Target....I could go on.

You have to find what works for you but these are some foods that have been great for me and controlling my GD with diet.  You will find your way.  Good luck!
