WWYD? Fire in the apartment?

So today while I was home with LO, my laptop burst into flames and literally exploded. The fire was confinded to the living room but with an open floor plan there is ash in the bathroom and kitchen. Not a lot, but you can see the little black spots on the white ceramics.

Thankfully we have renters insurance and were told that we could stay in a hotel and be reimbursed through our insurance after. However, funds are SUPER tight and I am not sure we can "afford" it, considering I don't know when the money would come back to us. Does that make me a terrible mom? Am I jeopardizing LO's health? Would the fire men let us come back in and say it was fine if we shouldnt be here? Im just not sure what to do in the situation.

 We tried calling the management but because its the weekend we got no response and our insurance adjuster will be here on Monday so I feel like I'm caught in between until then. WWYD?

    You can use a credit card. I don't like credit cards, but I have an emergency one.

    If you don't have one, and really don't have enough funds to scrape up (I've been there, no judgement), ask a family member to put it on his/her credit card, or loan $, since you will be reimbursed.

    Another option is to go back to the apartment, and if you truly feel it is unsafe for LO, have a family member watch the baby- you and DH stay there.... or the whole fam stay at said family members home. I hope you have family reasonably close.

    I know in the county I live in they have emergency vouchers you can obtain that pay for a couple nights in a hotel. The hotels aren't exactly five star, but they would work in a pinch. Google will help you locate services. It being a weekend makes it hard, but keep searching and you something will turn up.

    I'm not sure how dangerous it is per se, but it's probably not pleasant smelling by any means so I would probably stay in a hotel.

    You don't have friends or family you could stay with? It might not be super comfortable, but it would be free. If I had just had a fire in my house, I would not feel comfortable keeping my daughter there until it was repaired.

    Most insurance companies do not pay out for living expenses until you are out of the hotel.  You might want to contact your local red cross for help, I know they are always willing to help people who are displaced.  If it is bad enough to have your insurance company have you stay in a hotel, you need to go.

    We had a fire right before LO was born (see "Beds Are Burning" tab on my blog, in siggy). I would def not return until it was repaired. My asthma was triggered by things that had soot on them (which was everything) - just an item removed from the home...and my asthma isn't bad normally. PPs have had great suggestions and yes, you can contact Red Cross. They have places you can stay if you can't afford something. Or stay with someone. That's what we did - I had just begun my third tri and was sleeping on the floor for four weeks. It's not ideal but it works out.

    I'm terribly sorry to hear this happened. It was the worst experience of my life.

    I was just thinking more about this and since it just happened today....you'll want to stay somewhere else IMO. You're probably in shock (and might not even believe me when I say it!) but the night my fire happened and we were sitting at Red Cross firefighters were telling us we might get to go back in that night. Uhh. No. It was condemned, of course, but that made us all think the damage wasn't that bad. Fire is devastating and I don't mean only the flames - the smoke, the water, the force with which the water comes out of the hose and those clonky firefighters. Take at least a few nights to sleep on it - if you'd like to PM me, please do!
