Postpartum Depression

Who do I see?

I think I have PPD and I'm not sure who to go see. Should I see my Primary Care Doctor who specializes in women's health or see my behavioral prescriber? I see the prescriber for my ADD but she isn't a therapist.

I'm scared...I don't even know what to say when I call whoever I should call to make an appointment. :(

Re: Who do I see?

  • I didn't have any idea either.  I called my husband's Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and they set me up with a list of therapists to see.  I get unlimited telephone counseling and 6 free face-to-face visits.  After that, if I want/need to continue, I will work through our health insurance.  When I made my appointment with the therapist, she didn't even ask what it was for, just when I could come in.

  • I was always told to tell your OB. Then if needed they will either prescribe you meds or refer you to someone else. You should start with your OB.

  • I have to suggest that you get a referral for a psychotherapist, ideally one who specializes in PPD issues.  PCPs can prescribe meds but are not trained to support the long-terms needs of someone with PPD.  Besides, PPD can not only affect you, it can also affect your relationship with you baby.  Check out resources for Child-Parent Psychotherapy, which has been shown to improve the relationship between mothers with depression and their babies.
