Couldn't resist and bought a doppler...

I've been reading about some of you guys buying dopplers, and sure enough, last night I went on Ebay and won an auction.  I should be receiving it next week but know that I probably won't be able to actually hear the heartbeat for another couple of weeks.

For those who have purchased one for this pregnancy or for a past one, when was the first time that you were able to hear the heartbeat? Also, any tips or advice on how/when best to use it?

TIA!

Re: Couldn't resist and bought a doppler...

  • Neat. I can't bring myself to buy one I feel like I would go crazy always trying to find it.  I know as far as when, my doctor won't try with a doppler until around the 12 week mark and he even said sometime then it can be tricky to find it.

  • Got the doppler around 10 weeks when pregnant with Gabe.  Couldn't find anything the first couple of attempts.  Finally caught fleeting horse hooves/techno beat around 10 and a half weeks.  It remained hit or miss until my uterus rose up out of my pelvic cavity between 12 and 13 weeks, then I could always find it.

Early on, have a full bladder, bolster your hips up (pillow under your butt or lay on your bed with your hips just off the edge), and go very, very low.  Use a fair amount of gel, and move very, very slowly.  Spend some time just getting used to the sounds.  Your heartbeat, static or white noise, if you can find the placenta (will sound like wind whooshing through trees).  If you can find the placenta you may have an easier time finding the baby (it won't be far from that,  but this early, the baby's heartbeat can be blocked by the placenta).

And don't get frustrated or upset.  You may have a hard time finding it before 14-16 weeks.  A lot of people find it earlier, but a lot don't.  If you can't find it in 5-10 minutes, calmly put it away and try again in a couple of days.  If you find yourself panicking or getting upset, consider getting rid of the doppler.  No good in it if it only freaks you out.

  • You might want to research home use of a doppler before you use it frequently at home.

  • I got a sonoline b and found the heartbeat at 9w. I lay down propped up on a pillow and it was down near my hairline.
