I'm going to start whole milk tomorrow but I'm not sure how much to give. Is there a science to weaning off formula or just kind of take it slow? Please tell me how you were successful. DD LOVES her bottle so I'm quite nervous about the transition.

Re: Weaning off bottle....help
I didnt know we started that early, am I out of the loop?
edit: I didnt mean that snarky either...I just wondered when we switch, because I thought it was 1 year. Regardless, I hope your DD takes to the changes well! We have been trying a sippy cup lately and my DD is not having that, lol.
Just go slow. I remember this being stressful for me too, but I had my daughter off of bottles by 13 months with relatively little stress or issue.
I think I started by dropping the two daytime bottles first. So I would give DD a morning bottle and an evening bottle but do the rest of the day with sippies. I would put milk in the sippies and half milk/half formula in the bottles. Then I dropped the morning bottle and just gave a sippy of milk with breakfast. Then I dropped the evening bottle last.
As their solid intake increases, you will notice a decrease in the need for official "feedings" with the bottle. And as you decrease the feedings with a bottle, they will drink more from the sippy at meal time to make up for it.
It seems like a lot, but like so many things it just happens. Yes, you have to make some kind of effort (you can't just keep feeding him bottles 4x per day and expect a change) but if you go slowly it should be pretty simple.

My thoughts on cold turkey : works for some babies and not others. Just like some breastfed babies can easily transition to bottles and some can't. Give it a whirl and if it works - lucky you! If not, just go slow and it will work out

I'm trying to start the sippy transition with BM. It's not going well. I've only ever given her water in the sippy, so it's more of a toy than food. This morning I put her BM in a sippy and once she realized what was in there she freaked out (in a bad way). It only lasted about 3 minutes before I poured it back in a bottle. Oh well. That's why I'm starting now.
p.s. Is your pedi on board with the early switch to WCM?
We're starting in 2 weeks and will first do 4oz formula + 2oz milk, then 3oz each, then 4oz milk + 2oz formula, then all milk. Our pedi recommended starting 2 weeks before his 12 month appointment so we can discuss any issues, but there's no rush for him to be drinking all milk at 1 year. She likes babies off bottles by 15 months and he's always been a bottle fighter, so I may just go cold turkey once he's on milk. 12 months of bottle fighting has been enough for both of us!
I know switching early seems to be one of the big things on the Bump, but ditto pp about not doing it before asking your pedi.
I tried putting DD on half milk and half formula at 10.5 months. It did not go well- her iron levels were going low, so we switched back to all formula. I dont plan on trying again until after 1 year. I suggest the same for your LO.
Also, we quit cold turkey with the bottle. She gets her formula/juice/water in sippys.....although the other day she almost attacked her cousin for her bottle, lol !
I got rid of the bottle cold turkey at 9.5 months...the earlier the easier.
I didn't mix in any WCM until 11 months.

I plan to do the same thing at 10 months. I am going to give 4oz of formula mixed with 2 oz of milk 4 times a day for a few weeks. Then go half and half for a few weeks. Then 2oz of formula and 4 oz of milk for a few weeks...etc... As long as your baby eats well and maintains a healthy weight there shouldn't be anything to worry about. I am also looking into vitamin drops for when we are off formula completely. GL
