Babies: 9 - 12 Months

top teeth more painful than bottom?

We experienced a lot of waking up and crankiness while cutting the bottom two teeth. However, the second top tooth is killing us. She is up all night - last night she only got 7.5 hrs of sleep total and it's usually 12-13. She is taking a single one hour nap each day. She's also rapidly approaching Wonder Week 46, which doesn't help things. Anyone else find that the top teeth were more painful or is LO being a bit of a drama queen (which is often the case)?

  • Oddly, bottom teeth are more painful for Finn.  He got 4 top teeth in a week and was cranky, but getting the 2nd set of bottom teeth was hellacious.

Knock on wood, but 1 top molar is in and the only sign was drooling.  That's a miracle in our house!

    This here, too!

I think it's different for every baby. Could be just the teeth or maybe she's going through the 9-month wakeful period now, too.

  • Everyone I know says top teeth are more painful, for some reason, but every baby is different. For us, the top were far worse than the bottom.
  • Oh no! There is a nine month wakeful too?? We escaped the four month wakeful, so crossing fingers here.

  • The bottoms were a walk in the park compared to the tops for us! It was awful! I hope your LO cuts those teeth soon, it got so much better when they finally poked through. :)
  • Yes, J's top teeth have been a bear.  I make sure to give him lots to chew on during the day and a dose of tylenol before bed.  If he wakes up I give him another dose! I don't believe in the nine month wakeful period.  I believe babies change and sleep habits change too.  You just have to keep your routines solid and let baby know night time is for sleeping.

  • with my first son, the top teeth were a lot more painful than the bottom. I am starting to see the same thing with Aaron as well. He is beyond cranky most days and fighting his naps. They appear to really be bothering him even with oragel and tylenol.

  • top teeth were more painful for my DD1. But oddly enough all 4 of her molars came in and I didn't even notice because she was perfectly fine.

DD2 has no signs of top teeth yet but she's a crankball so I think they are coming soon
