We are disposing of a car seat due to a car accident. Are there any places to specifically take old seats to or just put it out with the trash? Also, aside from cutting the straps, is there anything else I should do to ensure that someone doesn't find and use the seat?

If you have an ax, have a go at the carseat with it. It might take some effort but you want to break it as much as you can. You don't want to risk someone spotting an empty shell and thinking they can DIY something up to make it acceptable.
Here are some other tips to destroy it properly for disposal: https://www.car-seat.org/showthread.php?t=65456
I might let DH try the axe method or the BRILLIANT idea of using it as a trade-in at BRU for a coupon. It's a SK Radian so it's definitely too heavy to pay shipping on to have it recycled in Austin, but if I were nearby I'd totally recycle it. I live in a very eco-conscious area so I'm pretty surprised that there isn't a seat recycling program here at all.
Thank you for all your input!
