Pregnant after 35

What does your DH's work offer for time off post-baby?

I'm wondering if there are differences in state & company's providing fathers time off after the baby is born.

In FL, my DH has to use his own vacation time, and is allowed some short amount of time off unpaid (not that we can afford unpaid time off to any great extent).

  • No paid time unless you use vaca time at my company. A Father is eligible for FMLA time (unpaid 16 weeks) however the mother can not be at home to take advantage of that.

  • My DH gets no time off for baby. He only gets 10 vacation days and will have to use some of that to stay home. His company is too small to qualify for FMLA.

  • dh is an executive at a company where he doesn't accrue vacation or sick time.

instead it's all 'honor system' ... that is you can take all the time off you want, and get paid, as long as your work is done.  when dh takes off, he devotes about an hour a day to keeping up with email, and will participate in a few conference calls.

LO is due mid december when things at his company are slow.  so dh will probably be in 'vacation' mode for most of the month. in january he will probably 'officially' work from home a few days a week.  and then in february start going in a few days a week.  we are very, very lucky.

on the other hand, i am allowed to use 6-8 weeks of paid sick time (6 for vag birth, 8 for c/s ... if i have accrued this much sick time), then i can choose to do 12 weeks of unpaid FMLA or my accrued paid vacation time or both.  i could probably take some additional leave without pay ... but 2 kids are expensive, and we gotta make the donuts!

  • My SO doesn't get time off. He gets one paid week off a year even though he has been with the company for 7yrs and hasn't used all of his past vacation or sick leave. I think I will be lucky to have him for a day off. I plan on only taking a month off because I can't afford to be without a paycheck. Plus I still have a daughter to support from my previous marriage. I am so fortunate though to have my parents as babysitters after I go back to work.
  • Just FMLA. Unpaid. DH will take sick leave to be with me at the hospital but will go back to work after we are home as my mom will be staying for a month to help out.

  • Just unpaid time via FMLA, or vacation time if he wants to use it.  But I used to work for a company that gave 2 weeks of paid paternity leave, which I honestly think should be something all companies do.  Of course, that was the US branch of a UK company, so they seemed to have more civilized ideas about things like that.
