EBF and Zoloft?

Any EBF moms taking Zoloft or any other antidepressants care to share their thoughts on effects on baby?

I have been prescribed a 25 mg dose and have done a little research, but I am hesitant to start it.  My doc says it should be fine, but because there haven't been any studies done she isn't 100%.  I really think the meds will help but I want to feel a little more comfortable.

 Any thoughts?

TIA

"In summary, they noted that breastfeeding infants? exposure to paroxetine, sertraline and nortriptyline are unlikely to have detectable or elevated plasma drug levels" (Zoloft = sertraline)

That would make me feel comfortable. Infantrisk does a lot of looking into drugs and breastfeeding - I really trust them as a source.

  • I'm pretty sure the studies on SSRIs and breastfeeding show very little Zoloft makes it into your milk.  I can't tell you what to do but remember that your mental health is important.

  • Thanks.  I was feeling pretty positive when I left the Doc with my RX but I am a worrier and Dr Google gets me every time.  I like to have all my bases covered.

  • my LOs pedi is okay with me taking zoloft (I am on 1 50mg pill/day).  Let me just say that I feel SO MUCH BETTER on it.  Back to my normal self (I was having an insane amount of anxiety like not wanting to drive with girls, travel, etc).  I also EBF....no issues.

  • I'm on 25mg of Zoloft and EBF. I went on it two weeks before I went into labor b/c my anxiety was starting to get out of control.  It's also just about the lowest dose you can take and that amount works for me.

Like PPs said, there is such a trace amount that makes it into the milk that the benefits of it for me (feeling/being normal) far outweigh the minimal risks that have been found so far.

FWIW, I totally freaked out about it before I started it too.

  • How long did it take you all to start feeling like your normal self???

My H had to talk me into taking my Zoloft. I was having anxiety about the medicine for my anxiety. Hah. I have only taken 3 doses so far.

  • My doc said what appears in the milk is one thing but what really matters is how much is absorbed by baby.  Baby absorbs effectively nothing.
