Profile

Our profile is the last thing we need to do while we wait for my finger prints to get back and they finish writing up our home study and we're just having an awful time starting it. Our worker gave us some examples but I dont know I feel like I cannot pick the right photos and I worry about the wording I'm just having a miserable time starting any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Profile

  • We had a blast with ours. We had such a good time trying to find pictures and putting it all together.

I'd start with pictures, and lots of them. Find some of each of you, some of you together, family, pets, you name it. The more candid, the better. DD's BM picked us in part because I had a picture of DH with a silly hat on his head.

Then start culling. We had some guidelines, so we got rid of pictures where we were in sunglasses or swimsuits (ha! I think there was maybe one), with alcohol in the picture, or too far away to know what was going on.

We kept in a picture or 2 of us with family. I had a great picture of DH walking with my nephew the last time we'd visited.

For wording, I'd just start writing. Your first draft isn't going to be set in stone, so see how you like it, run it by your DH, see where you'd want to tweak it, and go from there. I had a horrible ending sentence to our Dear Birthparent part, but DH had good feedback on how to change it.

    GL!

  • I guess our problem is we didnt take a lot of photos he and I like to be behind the camera. I love your disclaimer at the bottom lol

  • We had a really hard time getting started, too.  The way we approached it was to set a "theme" for each page, and then build from there.  Because of the program we were using, we knew we had 20 pages to work with.  We set it up as 1) cover, 2-3) Dear BM Letter, 4-5) about me by DH, 6-7) about DH by me, 8-9) aroung our house, 10-11) our families, 12-13) our hobbies, 14-15) our holidays/traditions, 16) vacations, 17) football games (we're big fans), 18) us with friends, 19) our dogs, 20) farewell/summary.

When we had the shell made, we got photos to fit (and made a few new ones) and added a little text.  Just a sentence or two for each photo works, and we only put 2-4 photos per page.  The bulk of the writing was on the first 6 pages.  Our agency didn't have a ton of guidelines, but this was what we came up with after doing some research and looking at profiles online.  Our agency actually suggested a professional profile company, but we decided to give it a try ourselves.  We had a lot of fun doing it, and we got selected the first time it was shown.

A side note of the set-up: DH and I disagreed about what to do with our dogs.  I wanted their page to be closer to the front, and I wanted to include more of them in other pages.  DH didn't want us to look like "crazy dog people" and wanted to keep it low-key.  We went with DH's suggestion.  When we met the BPs, one of the first things they mentioned was how much they liked our dogs!  You just never know.

One thing that made it easier for us was that we agreed to make a profile to get out there, and then work on perfecting it to resubmit later.  It took some of the pressure off for us to just do it and stress about the details later.  We never made the second profile, but we would have if we hadn't been selected so quickly.

    Good luck, and enjoy!

  • If you don't have enough photos that you like, you may have to "stage" some of you guys doing things you like to do together.
