caffeine, m/s questions......

I have m/s like crazy since I have been 6w2d I am currently 7w5d........ The doctor prescribed me ondansetron. I took it once on one of the really bad days....but DH and I talked about it and the medicine is originally for radiation/chemo patients to help with being sick. I know it should be safe if the doctor prescribed it but I still have reservations.

Recently I felt absolutely miserable and drank a soda during an episode of nausea and it made me feel SOOO much better. Since Labor Day it was probably soda number 4 (which is really good for me). But I feel so guilty for drinking it!! Any thoughts? Has anybody else been prescribed ondansetron and had a healthy baby?

I'm so tired of being sick! I have heard that m/s is a sign that the baby is healthy...how much truth is in that? If so maybe I'll just tough it out and move my pillow and blanket to the bathroom!

Re: caffeine, m/s questions......

  • Is it possible it was the sugar that made you feel better and not the caffeine?

I was feeling really sick about 2 weeks ago and my SIL handed me a nutrigrain bar.  I immediately felt better and she said for both pregnancies, if she got low on sugar she would feel like crap.

  • Maybe so! I'll try out something else and see if that works.

  • I think it's the carbonation that makes you feel better.  the bubbles work for me!

  • You might also want to try a carbonated non-caffeine drink like ginger-ale.  It might be the bubbily that is making you feel better and ginger is suppose to be good for m/s as well.
  • Maybe try ginger ale and peanut butter and crackers.  The nurse at my doctor's office said that anything with ginger helps to calm your stomach and my regular doctor (that is 10 weeks pregnant) said that having a little bit of protein with some carbs helps with morning sickness.  It's worth a try, right?? :)

PS - odansetron is the generic of Zofran, which is the one always prescribed to pregnant women.  It's 100% safe to take.

ditto. I had m/s all the way through labor (including getting put in the hospital for it) with my daughter and took it a lot. She is a healthy happy almost 5 year old. It's an amazing drug.  not that you should make yourself take it if you don't need it but there's no point in being sick and miserable if you don't have to.

  • Maybe it was the carbonation that made you feel better.  Try seltzer water?
  • I've been having pretty bad m/s in the last couple of weeks and Ginger Ale has REALLY helped me! They say clear sodas (Ginger Ale, Sprite, 7up) help your stomach when it's upset and they are caffeine free!
