What do painters do?

I know, dumb question right?  So, I'm thinking about hiring painters to paint our master bedroom.  Do they move furniture, take down pictures, remove outlet covers, take down curtain rods, etc?  Or do they just paint?  Also, about how much do you think it would cost?

I am so sick of painting.  I removed wallpaper and painted our last house (the entire main level, master BR, and master bath).  I think I am done with painting for life, lol.

I *think* they will do it all, but you can yourself a buck by doing some of the grunt work ahead of time.

    Good luck!

This. I wouldn't want to pay a professional painter for the time it takes to remove outlet covers etc.

Of course not!  So I'm guessing it's not just included in the price then, right?  They would be paid hourly?

  • I have hired painters twice since being in my home. The first time we had the entire house painted....well almost.....(all but one secondary bedroom)

    We had this done:

My home is 2200 sq feet, (minues the smallest bedroom), 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, living room, dining room, family room, eat in kitchen, laundry room.

They did all the painting, moving the furniture, removed wall hangings (asked if they had to plug any wall hanging holes), all the walls, baseboards, closet doors (not insdie the closets - that was an extra cost of 75 per closet), moved my washer and dryer, Provided ALL the paint (didn't matter how many colors we choose), supplies, and the painter gave us a free color wheel to help pick out the colors (that was 10 bucks at the store), took down the curtains and blinds for us. Mind you they put all the furniture back and the blinds etc.

The only thing they won't do is touch your nick nacks or dishes that are in a buffett. They don't want to be responsible for that.

We had to let them use our hose to wash out all their brushes etc.

With all that he charged us 2200 for everything. Which I don't think wasn't that bad. We tried to paint the bedroom ourselves and spent well over 200 on paint and materials since we didn't know what we were doing.

This last iime we had our purple room turned to blue for my little boy that is coming. Again since we don't know how to paint it was 150, again a bargin since we spent over 200 on the room years ago.........

This. I would do as much "moving" as possible for them. They should give you a lump sum for the entire job (which typically does NOT include the paint - you usually purchase the paint). I wouldn't do it hourly.

They should be responsible for tarping all furniture though........

  • Oh yea, they remove the outlet covers and everything, that takes them all but a few minutes.

My guy was all one price....

Oh yea I didn't get ceilings done.....

My walls are all vaulted to...don't know if that matters but they did need special equipment to reach all the way to the top

Yea, they tarp the furniture and bring in the drop clothes for the floors.

And if they don't have enough paint for your walls, its their responsiblity to get more. I know since it was builders stuff on the walls, they needed a lot of paint and had to go to the store 2 more times since they started.

    The price didn't go up.

make sure you get something in writing that says what is included and make sure it says....

Includes all labor and MATERIALS....which means how many gallons it takes....

  • We have rental houses and have to paint a good bit.  It varies widely by who you are using.  I recently used a college grad who was out of work and he charged $10 an hour and we bought the paint.  He did everything.  We have a handyman we regularly use and he does not move the furniture, but does everything else.  Just make sure your on the same page.  Some painters just paint everything if you don't tell them not to, so try to be as clear with the details as possible.  Also, make sure you are there when they start painting to make sure the paint color looks how you want.  It sucks to come back to a house and find out the Leonardo yellow is a flaming disaster.  Professional painters tend to be better.  We have used a big company here a couple of times, but it is no guarantee that they will do the little things the way that you want without instruction.  Here a lot of the actual painters don't speak english, so I have a spanish speaking friend who will help me translate.
  • We just had painters in the last two days - they did 3 bathrooms (including ceilings), a bedroom, and touched up some outside trim. Their estimate/price included everything - all prep work, materials, clean up, etc. We got 4 or 5 estimates before we decided. I am NEVER painting on my own again. It was so nice, so quick, so easy, and looks fabulous. I am willing to pay to not have to deal with the hassle and have things look really nice.

It can go both ways, but I really want to be in control of the paint since I will only use BM and many painters don't. Also, sometimes, if the painter is in control of the paint, the price can be much higher since they sometimes build in a "profit" for the paint.

I worked in construction Management for 10 years, and we went through a LOT of paint on my projects. Under good conditions, a gallon of paint covers 400s.f. so I can estimate how much paint to buy.........
