2nd Trimester

Damn quad screen

I posted this on the March 2012 board too. So I did the quad screen last week, just because, why not, right? Well yesterday my MW called and said that the AFP was slightly elevated meaning there is a possibility of neural tube defects. I'm trying not to freak out, because 90% of positives turn out to be nothing, but on the same token, it's pretty scary to think my baby girl may have something wrong with her. I am supposed to get scheduled for a 3D ultrasound but the office is closed, so I wont even hear anything about when i'm scheduled until Monday at the earliest.... Did anybody else have this experience and how did it turn out.  Good news is, I'm getting a 3D ultrasound and get to see my kiddo in detail :D

  • Aw I'm a little behind you, so I'm waiting for that call anxiously. I'll call on wednesday if I don't get a call. I tested on Tuesday. I'm waiting for all my results from NT scan and both blood tests so I'm excited to be done this screening but anxious and nervous for results.
  • I haven't had this issue but I have heard there are a LOT of false positives. So try not to stress before you know for sure. I hope everything turns out good and you just get an extra peek at your LO soon ;-)

This... i had a positive one and was sent to get amniotic (sp?) fluid tested and everything was perfectly fine. I opted out of the testing this time around...  Getting a needle stuck into my belly was pretty invasive and a little nerve wracking. =/ I'm sure you'll be fine, Momma! :)

  • I JUST went through this. Had the b/w done at 16w1d. Like you was told I had a slight risk of NTD. I had an u/s & everything looked great. ( I had looked around online for u/s that showed the different markers they'd be looking for, that's how freaked I was before the u/s!) Repeated the b/w Monday at 18w1d. Came back elevated again, at which point my Dr. referred me to a genetic  counselor & mentioned I'd need an amnio. I was so upset! We went in to meet with the counselor who assessed our original risk, before the u/s, to be 2%. After the good u/s, it was .2%. She said she wouldn't recommend the amnio for NDT b/c you can usually see something with u/s & the amnio was better for DS & Trisomy. She assured me that there are some pregnancies where baby just makes a little extra of this protein & they are totally healthy & that a slight risk is just that in this screening test.

So try  not to worry all weekend, hard to do, easy to say.... I know! Just focus on getting another peak at your LO. And Good Luck!

  • I'm going through the exact same thing. I had the blood work done because I did with my DS and didn't expect to get a call saying I had an elevated risk. I was broken all day, couldn't stop crying, and I'm not a cryer! I couldn't wait for the specialist office to call me and I called them first thing. My level 2 u/s is tomorrow, I'm already a nervous wreck, but feeling more positive since I found out last week.

I was glad to read in a pp that someones doc wouldn't recommend the amnio for NDT b/c you can usually see something with u/s & the amnio was better for DS & Trisomy. I didn't realize that and I hope that's our case and don't have to get an amnio tomorrow.
