Concerned about my scan today 16wks

Hi ladies. We had our scan today and found out we are team pink. :)

Im a bit nervous, the dr saw a cyst on the brain. He said its typically associated with trisomy 18 but said these cysts are so common that they often dont mean it is. He said often they would see something wrong with the baby in the US too such as the heart or clenched fists.  In fact, they saw two prior ones earlier that day. Then I spoke with the genetic counselor and she said the same, and that if she saw this she wouldnt even blink-its that common. We will see more at 20 wks and hopefully the cyst will be gone

My NT and blood tests for markers made me low risk for trisomy at 1-6500 so I didnt do a CVS.

I feel a bit better after speaking to the counselor but yet it will remain in the back of my  head.

Has anyone heard of this? I dont know if I should wait to get a crib etc...or what. Feedback appreciated!

  • First, that's scary! Hugs to you. My cousin had the same thing happen. Then at the 20 week a/s they decided it wasn't a cyst but looked like an anurism. It didn't go away until they checked at 36 weeks. He's now a very happy healthy 4 year old.

  • I don't know too much, but I know my niece had a cyst on her brain at the anatomy scan. My bil & sil were told it was fairly common, usually went away on its own in a few weeks, and usually was nothing to worry about. They did a follow up u/s a few weeks later and it was gone. My niece was born 100% healthy!

    T&P's that everything is ok!

  • My sister was told the same thing with her 3rd, and it all turned out okay. :) Her DD2is now a happy and healthy 8-month-old.

  • My last son had one as well around 15-16 wks I think that is why they really want you to wait until 20 week anatomy scan.  It is pretty common to see at that time.  We went every 3 weeks for sonos but by the first one it was gone!  He was a big 8lbs 15ozs a week early at birth and today is a very healthy 4 yr old.  Try not to worry I know it can be stressful.  Hugs

  • Someone had a similar post a week or so ago - so I am just copying my response from that one...

I am a radiologist and I just wanted to give you a little encouraging factoid from one of my text books from residency re: choroid plexus cysts...

"Choroid plexus cysts are found in 0.5% of fetuses. Aneuploidy (most commonly trisomy 18) is found in of these 1-2% fetuses, especially if there are additional risk factors such as advanced maternal age or additional sonongraphic abnormalities".

     Good luck :-)
