Are you a good cook?

Another "getting to know you" question!

Me.. no friggin' way.  I completely stink at cooking.   Dinner tonight is hamburger, a jar of pasta sauce and elbow noodles all mushed together with lots of cheese and baked.  Baked Pasta.  One step above Hamburger Helper, ladies!  (Which I have a ton of in my pantry.)

I want to be like the TV chefs who have all things prepped and ready and you just toss it in a pan and make it look easy.

I do like to bake, tho.

Re: Are you a good cook?

  • I am fabulous.  Organized, but I can just throw stuff together and have it work.  Fresh ingredients, usually organic.

    Um.

When I don't have a toddler and a 2-month old, anyway.  Tonight, dinner could potentially be mac and cheese.  From a BOX.

I bake okay, but I usually need a recipe for that, even if I deviate from it.  I just lack the knack.  :)

  • I'm a good cook, but I follow recipies.  I don't just whip things up off the top of my head.  I also like to bake...mostly cookies and occasionally cupcakes.

  • I'm an adequate cook. Not a good one. But I'm getting better.

Though adequate is selling myself short. I'm decent enough and do better when preparing a holiday meal (I make a mean Thanksgiving dinner) but I find it rough to cook when I'm keeping track of Aaron, though. He keeps coming in and is fascinated by the burner on the stove. Figures. Danger attracts him.

  • No, I just don't have time. I really, really wish I did though.
  • I was a pretty decent cook but now I can't stand long enough to be super awesome :(

  • H, you need a good, tall kitchen stool with wheels on!  :)

  • stever, I'll FedEx you DH's cooking, then you're set. Me, I suck. I am 1000% better than 15 years ago (DH's assesment, he's right), but he cooks circles around me. I burnt tonight's dinner. It was pizza.

I can however bake like a pro. WTF. Anyone want cheesecake, or strudel, or heck, just pick anything dessert related. I don't use recipes.

ETA: I invite you all over while I make trifle. It's fantastic, but I guarantee we'll all be wobbly.

  • I think I am not a bad cook. Usually I make tasty meals and I like to try all kinds of cuisines. Indian is one of my favorite, but I make Thai, Chinese, Mediteranian.... Before I had Ian, I cooked every day! Now with Ian and having my mom around I will forget where my spices are:) My mom cooks almost every day. I feel like living in a hotel.

As for desserts..I am not great. Sometimes I can follow a recipe, but nah... DH is doing a good job though:)

  • I think I am a pretty good cook but I get in ruts.  After working 8+ hours with a 40 minute commute, I do not have the energy to be inventive.  Last night was lamb chops, rice out of a box and frozen mixed vegetables.  And I did not get to eat the vegtables because my nephew dropped a plate and it landed in the dish and shattered.

  • I ama good cook and baker, but I need recipes and I need to plan. I am pretty lousy at just opening up the refrigerator and putting something on the table.  DH is good at that.  Between the two of us we always get something on the table.
  • I'm a pretty good cook.  I can throw something together easily enough.  But like vanverth, I tend to get into ruts so will find a dish, love it and burn out on it soon enough from cooking it so much.

  • Food network and cooking channel made me a cooking and baking snob. I could spend hours in the kitchen without recipes or with. Then I had ds. All that went out the window. I'm lucky if I have time to throw a salad together. Except on date night. Ils will take ds overnight and I cook and bake up a storm. But I work full time.
