Progesterone After IUI?

I had my first IUI on Saturday. Today I went back into the office for bloodwork. They told me they were testing my estrogen and progesterone. I got a call this afternoon saying to call back because they want to supplement my progesterone. I got the message late an the office was already closed. So, I have to call tomorrow.

I know that this may be a totally newbie question (which is okay because I am one) but why would they have to supplement my progesterone? Also, what form will this supplementation take. I heard that progesterone is given in shot form. I hate needles and don't know if I will be able to give myself shots.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Progesterone After IUI?

  • It was part of my protocol to use progesterone suppositories 2x a day. I do not have a progesterone problem either. It is common. They may want to supplement if it was a little low. It comes in suppository forms as well as the shot. The shot is usually given in IVF cycles and not IUI.

  • You need a certain level of progesterone to maintain pregnancy. It's pretty common to supplement it, just to make sure you have the best chance. I think shots are typically with IVF, vag suppositories are typical with IUI's. I think you're in the clear on the shots! Good luck!

  • I use Crinone after IUI, which is a vaginal suppository. It's in an applicator basically like a tampon, and you insert it and squeeze the end to insert the gel. It thickens your uterine lining and although this happens naturally with pregnancy, it's basically an insurance policy lol to maintain pregnancy if it occurs, and basically creates a nice and cozy environment for the embie, if fertilization takes place :)

It is very easy to use and I experienced "phantom" pregnancy side effects- bloating, sore nipples, emo-ness, crazy dreams, cravings, nausea. It wasn't too bad though. I had to do the suppository once a day, in the morning.

This.  The progesterone will help your lining so that implantation can occur.

  • Thanks for easing my mind. When my RE said that we were doing a natural cycle I thought that meant nothing "extra". When they called me this afternoon I thought that it meant something was wrong.

  • I was always prescribed progesterone suppositories after my IUIs. My initial blood work showed I was a bit on the low side and my RE prescribes it for almost everyone. I took Prometrium 2x/day. It's super easy to insert, although it does leave a discharge, so you want to wear a little something (gross, I know). Like a PP said, it will cause phantom pregnancy symptoms, so be prepared!! It's not so bad and I think it is great your RE is so cautious! Good luck!!

  • After each of my iui I have been told to take the prometrium. They were in the pill form. 600mg per day, which means 2 tabs 3X per day on an empty stomach....which is sometimes a challenge.

    good luck to you
