C-sections

epideral or spinal for planned c sec?

I am probably having a c section on Oct 17th (one week before due date) because baby is breech.  If this happens..will they give me an epi or spinal since its planned? I really dont know which is best or what is different about them..even trying to research.

What did you have and did it work for you?

Re: epideral or spinal for planned c sec?

  • Spinal. It's stronger, but shorter lasting. It's placed pretty much like an epidural (having had both, I never felt a difference).

  • Yep, spinal.  I loved my spinal.

  • I'm having a spinal for my second c-section.  I've heard it's easier to get back on your feet after that.  I sure hope it's true!

  • Spinals are used for scheduled c sections.  They start working faster than an epidural and wear off more quickly. The difference is where they are placed, epidural space or not, and a catheter is inserted with the epidural. The spinal is an injection only.

  • I had a spinal with my planned c/s and I hated it. I felt sick the whole time I was in the OR and I had to keep my catheter in longer than when I had an epi with DD1. It didn't seem to be very different, at least to me, than the epi, except that I felt like more of my body was numb than with the epi. Next time, I'm requesting an epi.

I had the exact same feeling. Like someone was sitting on my chest. I couldn't get a breath and I felt so incredibly sick to my stomach the whole time. YUK

  • Spinal for me. I had an emergency c/s and was early enough in my labor that I wasn't in pain yet (so didn't even have the epi discussion). Spinal worked like a charm.

  • My first c/s was unplanned after 22 hours of labor, and I already had an epi in place.  I recently asked my doctor what the plan was for my RCS and she said definitely spinal.
  • My spinal didn't work at all.  My friends who had spinals said they felt tugging and pressure.  But my friend with the epi said she didn't even feel that.
  • It also depends on your anesthesiologist's preference.  I had an epidural with my first as I labored for 20 hours first and ended up with a c-section.  My second was a planned c-section and I had another epdiural, based on my dr's preference/specialty and that I have some anesthesia issues.

What do you mean when you say your spinal didn't work?  You felt pain?  Or just pressure/tugging?

  • I had a spinal with my planned c. I was numb from the lower chest down within a few minutes of it being administered. I could feel pressure and some pulling/tugging but I didn't feel any cutting, stitching or the staples going in.
