I'm overhauling all of our toys/storage, etc now that the 2.5 yr olds that we were nanny sharing with are no longer coming over.
The problem is that we have a gazillion books.
It's insane really.
Half of them are in the main play room, some in the basement play room. We've got every Seuss book ever written, several of the mail order book collections (hand me downs), early readers, older baby-ish books, etc. Easily 300 - 400 books. Needless to say many of them don't see the light of day and they all get ditched in favor of this weeks library bag because those are all new and exiciting.
I've gotten rid of some of the really really baby books but I'm hesitant to pack up some of the simple baby books because they're good for early reading for the younger tot.
How do you organize your books?
Re: Ugh... how do you organize books?
We also have a TON of books (my mom works in a bookstore). About three times a year, we have a "library day" and get out all of the books and put them in stacks that make some sort of sense - authors, characters, animals, girly, etc. - and then put them back in the bookshelves. I always put them back on different shelves. It also helps spark interest in books that have been forgotten.
I really like to have books spread out throughout the house, not all in a designated "bookshelf." For instance, the bin of princess dolls has a few princess books in it. The bin of sea animal toys has related books inside. The shelf with games had a few extra inches, so I put a few books in there. There's usually a stack of kids books on my nightstand so she can read in there while I'm getting ready, etc. We have a cube toy/bookshelf in DD's room and I make a point of alternating between books and toys.
Maybe my DD is unusual, but I let her pick 5 library books every week (so I can always remember how many to bring back!). She usually only ends up really liking one of them and reading it a lot, and the others just get a few reads and that's it. She much prefers her own books because she knows the words and is familiar with the stories.
