Pre-School and Daycare

Ugh... how do you organize books?

I'm overhauling all of our toys/storage, etc now that the 2.5 yr olds that we were nanny sharing with are no longer coming over.

The problem is that we have a gazillion books.

It's insane really.

Half of them are in the main play room, some in the basement play room.  We've got every Seuss book ever written, several of the mail order book collections (hand me downs), early readers, older baby-ish books, etc.  Easily 300 - 400 books.  Needless to say many of them don't see the light of day and they all get ditched in favor of this weeks library bag because those are all new and exiciting.

I've gotten rid of some of the really really baby books but I'm hesitant to pack up some of the simple baby books because they're good for early reading for the younger tot.

How do you organize your books?

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.

  • We also have a TON of books (my mom works in a bookstore). About three times a year, we have a "library day" and get out all of the books and put them in stacks that make some sort of sense - authors, characters, animals, girly, etc. - and then put them back in the bookshelves. I always put them back on different shelves. It also helps spark interest in books that have been forgotten.

I really like to have books spread out throughout the house, not all in a designated "bookshelf." For instance, the bin of princess dolls has a few princess books in it. The bin of sea animal toys has related books inside. The shelf with games had a few extra inches, so I put a few books in there. There's usually a stack of kids books on my nightstand so she can read in there while I'm getting ready, etc. We have a cube toy/bookshelf in DD's room and I make a point of alternating between books and toys.

Maybe my DD is unusual, but I let her pick 5 library books every week (so I can always remember how many to bring back!). She usually only ends up really liking one of them and reading it a lot, and the others just get a few reads and that's it. She much prefers her own books because she knows the words and is familiar with the stories.

  • I have them by reading level with longer more involved books together and shorter ones together.  Like the franklin books would be with the longer, Pigeon and Llama Llama together and Sandra Boynton down with Dear Zoo and Good Night Gorilla.  I try deliberately to mix them up so I'm not reading 5 long princess stories.  FWIW, dr. seuss and its kin are near the more involved/longer section because while simple, they are usually long page-wise.

  • I just went through DD's books and put some away in her closet.  I dont have as many as you but limit them to what the bookshelf in her room can hold.  If I didn't I would go insane buying them. lol

  • Uugh.  We don't.  I've been thinking that I need to wade through them, pull out a ton, and create book rotations.  Some never see the light of day and others are falling apart b/c they are read so much.  Right now, the only organization is board books in DD's room, chapter books on one of DS's shelves, and everything else on his other shelves.

  • I am a teacher and so I constantly buy my DS books. I had a wishing well of books at my baby shower. It was great! We bought a long heavy wood bookshelf from ikea and put all of his books on it. And upstairs in his room we have a little plastic storage drawer storage container, his upstairs books stay in there. It keeps things pretty organized.
