Trying to Get Pregnant

s/o -Parents and the birds and bees

This post got me thinking......

Did your parents have difficulties getting pregnant?  Did it happen easily?

I realize that it has no bearing on our fertility, but it certainly has a bearing on their mindset.  Do they expect things to work out for you the way that it did for them?

  • My mom was using a condom and a diaphragm when she conceived my sister. With me, I am not so sure. I think she knows that things are not that "easy" for everyone else. She is pretty amazing with that kind of stuff..that?s part of why I love her so very much.

  • With both my sister and I, my mom was neither trying nor preventing. So I guess she didn't "have trouble", because she never had to try. If that makes sense. My grandmother had 5 kids, so I know she didn't have any trouble!

  • Good question, OP!

I have done some research ("Asking my mom a 1,000 questions") and found out that she had a difficult time conceiving. She got pregnant with twins before she had me and lost both of them due to unknown factors. She then conceived me and from what I know had an easy pregnancy. Then she also conceived another set of twins when I was about 8 but, sadly lost them as well at around 12 weeks due to them not growing.

My maternal grandmother got pregnant and had my uncle when she was around 19. From what my mother says, they didn't try very long. After my uncle was a few years old they wanted another child and tried for about 7 years before they conceived my mom. Apparantly they went on a mini vacation and got KU with my mom! Wink

  • I was a surprise. My parents adopted my older sister, and had been going through the adoption process for awhile. Shortly after they found out they had a baby coming, they found out that they actually had two babies coming.  My mom was 12 wks. pregnant with me when my sister was born, and by the time my sister arrived in the US, my mom was 5 months pregnant with me.

Then after me, she had 2 losses, and then got pg. with my younger sister 4 years later, and my baby sister 2 years after that.

That said, two of my sisters got pg. "on accident" and my other sister has been trying off and on for a year and a half, so we have all had very different experiences.

  • I was conceived while my mom was on the birth control pill. The next in my family is adopted (not because of fertility issues), and the third is conceived on purpose. Three more were conceived while using various forms of birth control. As a result, my dad had a vasectomy...it reversed itself and my parents had #7. Needless to say, I know that my parents didn't have trouble conceiving. My maternal grandmother had 8 children, so she obviously didn't have any problems either.

That said, my dad's mom lost several babies at various stages of pregnancy, and my step-mom did as well. If the ttc conceive journey takes a while, I suspect that my step-mom is going to be the best source of understanding even though I'm a lot closer to my mom.

    Mommy to N (3), J (2), and C (10 months). LO4 is due in mid-September.
  • My mother got pregnant with me a month after going off BCP.  She assumes the same will happen for me for some reason.  I wonder if she thinks fertility is genetic? Oh mama....

  • I haven't really had this conversation with my mom (mostly because we're keeping mum about TTC). However, I do know that my mom and my biological father weren't trying. Apparently when my mom learned she was pregnant with me, originally my biological father tried to convince her to abort me. Fortunately she didn't, and here I am.

With my brothers, my mom and step-dad got pregnant with brother #1 a little over a year after they got married. I don't know whether they were trying, but I do know that my mom got pregnant with brother #1 while my dad was serving on the jury for a murder trial. Brother #2 was conceived about 9 months after brother #1 was born. But I don't know anything about the circumstances regarding him.

  • All of the women on my mom's side of the family (mom, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousins) have gotten pregnant without trying (some of them several times).  So people assume I'm "Super fertile" as well.  But they were all about 10 years younger than I am now when they started having children.

  • My mom got pregnant with me as soon as she threw out her BCP. She got pregnant so quickly, in fact, that she thinks she must have had a spontaneous ovulation.

With my brother, she got pregnant immediately after she quit BFing me.

Since I'm in cycle 5, and my mom knows it, she definitely doesn't expect things to go the same way they did for her.

  • I don't know how long my parents were trying to conceive my older sister but when she was about 1 my Mom decided that she wanted another baby (me!). My Mom met my Dad at the front door naked and I was conceived somewhere either on the stairs or up against the living room wall (thanks for that mental picture Mom). The joke was always condoms don't work if they are upstairs and you are having sex downstairs. I've known that story since I was 12 or so.

  • My parents had trouble with all 3 of us. They tried for 4 years before they got my older sister. The doctor's couldn't find any reasons why they were unable to conceive. They were only able to have all 3 of us thanks to the help of Clomid.

I'm rounding out my 14th month so I kind of have a feeling this "runs in our family" ...

    PAIF/SAIF/etc welcome!

  • My mom & dad planned it all out and had no trouble conceiving. Me, then 3 years later, sister. Easy pregnancies, easy deliveries. (Oh please let this be me!)

I don't think the thought even crosses their minds that a person could have difficulty conceiving.

  • I was a surprise. My mom was told by her OB/GYN that due to having Endometriosis, she wouldn't be able to get pregnant.  So they accepted it and went on with life, not trying or preventing.  Clearly the Dr. was wrong because she got pregnant twice (the first was a m/c), and here I am!  Lucky, lucky her. • No one on either of my parents' sides of the family have ever had problems getting pregnant except for my Aunt and Uncle (but they were in their mid-40's, so I'm not surprised with that).

My mom got pregnant with both me and my sister on accident.

My Grandma cannot fathom why I haven't gotten pregnant yet.  She literally asked me if we knew we were having sex right, and she was completely serious.

  • I was apparently some what of a surprise, though I don't know if I was a BC failure or just a NTNP situation (in which case, you can't really be THAT surprised). With my sister, I don't think they had any trouble. I'm certain that if my mom could relate at all to TTTC, she would have mentioned it by now.

With DD I got pregnant immediately.

  • My mom was 22 years old, and off the pill for one month when she conceived me. She never wanted anymore children, so I am an only child. She feels badly that it's taking us so long, but she really has no advice. Like others, I've had to educate her on how this whole "lets make a baby" thing really works!
Patiently waiting for our 1st since 9/2010.

  • My mom got pregnant with me the first month trying and pregnant with my brother while she was still BFing me (I was 9 months). She said both pregnancies and births were easy, and she went natural. Hopefully I will get a similar experience.

  • My parents did not have any issues getting pregnant with me. However, they tried for 10+ years after my birth to have another- with the help of fertility drugs and treatments. After many miscarriages and a final tubal pregnancy they gave up. When I was 16, they found out they were expecting again- totally unexpected and unplanned.
