Get photos taken -- you can get them done at CVS -- then application from the post office. $110 and some time later, you will have your passport.

You can also print out your application online at the State Department website. It's faster if you finish it online, and then take it to the post office.

Ditto doing it online and printing it ahead of time. Also, not all post offices process them, so call to double check. If you need it expedited you can pay extra - we had to for DS's passport and got it in 3 days...I had no idea the government could work that fast, lol.

Passports for kids under 18 must have both parents present when applying. Learned that the hard way. Google US passports and the forms will come up that you need to print. Get all your stuff in order, then go to the post office. Some take appointments. Costco does passport photos.

    Yup - all the above.

And don't dilly dally with this.  It CAN take 8-10 weeks to be processed.  Generally it's much faster but I wouldn't risk it.

CALL the post office to ask, don't just look online. The post office website is not always updated in a timely manner. And my local post office used to do them and doesn't anymore.

Our library does them, which is nice because our post office only does passports on certain days at certain times.

why ask that here instead of entering a simple google search?

In my area, my post office takes the pictures (and has the forms) and also my local AAA office did pictures free for members, too.
