Trying to Get Pregnant

Positive OPK but no ovulation?

How common is this? I guess I should note that it has only been a couple months since I went off the pill (end of July). I got the withdrawal bleed right after, then had a 34 day cycle and got regular period in early September. I was thrilled that I got a period because I thought that meant I would at least ovulate. I had been using a month's worth of OPKs all through September, and finally got a positive one last Saturday. I've also been charting my temps. I thought that women typically ovulate a few days after a positive OPK, but I am not sure I have ovulated yet! I know that it's possible to get a positive OPK and then not ovulate, but I was just wondering how common this is. I haven't gotten a temperature rise, but also thought there could be a possibility that my thermometer is kind of crappy. It's the Target brand thermometer. I even took my temp just now (8:00 at night) and it only came out to 97.6! Isn't that really low for a regular temperature? So is it possible that I still have ovulated and my thermometer is just out of whack?

Re: Positive OPK but no ovulation?

  • This might sound like a stupid question, but is it a regular thermometer or a basal thermometer?  Either way, if it is giving you a low temp now, that doesn't sound right. I use the Targer brand basal, but I have heard that a lot of people prefer the Walmart brand.

Also, in regards to the positive OPK, but no O, do you have a link to your chart?

  • The packaging said it was a basal thermometer... But yeah, I thought it was strange that I got such a low temperature late in the day.

No link as of now as I have been charting on a print-out thing instead of online, but maybe when I get a chance I will do them on FF. But the past week-ish, my temps have been jumping from like, 97.3, 96.8, 97.2, 96.8, 97.1, 96.8, 96.6, 97.2, 96.6, 97.2. So it has kind of been jumping up and down sort of drastically compared to the previous 10-11 days. I also thought it was a little weird that it went as low as 96.6.

  • I thought most basal thermometers went to the hundredths instead of tenths.  Mine does.

They do, you are totally correct. They are more precise than regular thermometers.

  • It's a basal body thermometer. It does go to the hundredths, but my app on my phone rounds it and my paper chart only goes to the tenths :) I'm hoping that the thermometer is just a piece of crap and that it's totally off on my temps. I took my temp yesterday afternoon with it too at like, 3 PM and it said my temp was 96.8!! So low fora  mid-day temperature, so I'm pretty sure it's just crappy and if I am not pregnant this cycle I will definitely be getting a new thermometer. Thanks for the input, guys!
  • This happened to me this cycle. I got a positive OPK on CD 17 and no thermal shift (I use Target brand BBT as well FWIW). I was told my body was "gearing up" for ovulation, but it just didn't happen for some reason. I got another positive OPK on CD 25, and I def O'ed this time. I haven't had a problem catching my thermal shift with the Target brand BBT, but I've read a lot of reviewers on the Target website complaining that it has favorite temps. Also, it DOES read temperature to the hundredths but the temperatures you've noted (96.8, 97.2, etc.) are common for me too. It will read 96.80 on the thermometer. Throw it away if you feel it's not any good, but I really haven't had any major problems with it.
