Babies: 9 - 12 Months

letting them go barefoot = late walker?

So DS is 12 months, and just starting to walk a few steps here an there.  Sure, he's on the later side of the curve, but by no means delayed.  MIL is convinced he should be walking and has hinted that it's because I don't really put him in shoes a lot ( he hates them and just tries to rip them off, what's the point?).  Well today she informed me that she wants to take him to Stride Rite to get fitted for a pair of shoes so he will start walking....

If she wants to buy him a pair of Stride Rites that's fine, but has anyone else heard of getting them fitted for these shoes so that they will START to walk?  I haven't.  Please enlighten me?

Re: letting them go barefoot = late walker?

  • My MIL swears that babies need shoes, from day 1.  I think they're totally unnecessary until they're walking outside, or it is cold (and they'll be outside/traveling).  IMO, the shoes would probably support his ankles, and he could potentially walk earlier, but why would you want to artificially do that?  Let his muscles get stronger on their own, and he'll walk when he's good and ready.

And, just an fyi, a 12 month walker is only "on the later side of the curve" on the bump.   Not a single baby boy I know IRL (with the exception of my brother) has walked before 15 months.  :)

  • That's one of the dumbest theories I've ever heard. You can tell your MIL I said that.

  • my boy will be 1 year in 11 days and isn't CLOSE to walking.  He cruises a bit and pulls to stand very well but has TERRIBLE balance and can't stand on his own yet.....i'm not TOO concerned and have read that there are many reasons they don't walk till later (if they are good crawlers or if they are larger kids)

  • NO and to be honest they really shouldn't be in soled shoes.  If they start walking in shoes too early, it can lead to pediatry problems.  Best thing to have on babies feet are those soft leather soled shoes that really don't slip.  You can get them at target.

  • Definitely not. The Pedi even said shoes weren't necessary and if we did put them on, to make sure they were soft soles and flexible.

  • Oh and I just looked at the Stride Rite website; even their "soft" shoes are too much.

ETA: the robeez are perfect though

  • I will put in a note here that our pedi did recommend we put ds in hard soles asap.....this was only because he WOULD NOT stand flat footed at all and she told us that it'd be harder for him to learn to walk extremely tippy toed and then flat foot.  I understand all babies start out a bit tippy toe....but he was an extreme case

  • Actually, having them in shoes HINDERS walking.  Babies learn to walk by gripping with their toes and that can't happen unless they are barefoot, in socks or soft-soled shoes.  Babies shouldn't transition to regular shoes until they have been walking, unsupported, for at least a month.

  • She is incorrect, TobleroneBar is correct, barefoot is best or closest thing to it, a soft flexible non stick sole. Just google barefoot is best for babies and lots of info should come up, and 12m and walking a little is just fine, not delayed at all. If she wants to buy shoes so bad suggest pedipeds or robbeez, they aren't cheap so I wouldn't discourage her.

    Yes
  • Our pedi says that babies need to learn to walk barefoot because it works the correct muscles in the correct way. Babies need to learn how to feel their way around with their feet and toes... to be able to grip the floor or figure out how to use their toes for balance. That's also why I have these.....

    https://www.vibramfivefingers.com/products/Five-Fingers-Speed-Womens.htm

They are designed to work those muscles so that it changes the way I walk. I can already notice a diference in the way I walk and feel. They also re-align the entire skeleton. So far, so good.

And tell your MIL that when we were all kids, they also didn't have car seats, seat belts, they had lead based paint, and all that other AWESOME stuff that would kill us all now! lol

  • My daughter hardly wears shoes. She started walking a little over a week ago. There is no correlation and your MIL is pretty silly for thinking there is.

Toboner is totally right. Also, babies use their toes for balance (what they're for, duh!) so by learning to walk while barefoot is actually the best for them. Your MIL has not idea what she's talking about.

  • I have actually heard the opposite. I have always heard barefoot is much better for new walkers.

  • Oh I don't care, I'm sure she's annoyed... but, I came off as friendly as possible, like "if you still want to buy the shoes you are more than welcome, but I just wanted you to see that they aren't necessary for him to start walking!"
  • You sound like you have been totally misinformed.  First of all, 12 months is in no way whatsoever late AT ALL to be walking.  I would actually still consider it early, or maybe average at worst.  Most kids I know started around 13 months, some later.  And no you are not supposed to put shoes on your baby at this age, unless you have him out walking outdoors and it's for safety and warmth.  Bearfoot is best for indoors because they can feel and grip the floor much better.  He will walk faster and with fewer tumbles if you have him barefoot.  YOur MIL is totally backwards on this.  But I would let her buy the shoes anyway.  With the weather getting cold, it'll be nice to have something covering his foot when you are outdoors in a stroller.  If you do get some, make sure they have a leather or really thin rubber sole that bend very easily.  Stride Rites are expensive, so if MIL wants to buy a pair, let her.

  • My mom just bought the boys their first pair of shoes today! My one little guy has been walking for about 2 months already. Neither have worn shoes ever!  The other one isn't walking yet but I'm not worried he'll do it eventually. I have never heard such a thing!

  • I personally think baby shoes are absolutely silly and look so uncomfortable and heavy on their little toes (which they want to play with and chew on!). My MIL insists on buying DS pairs of running shoes all the time and he never ever wears them. He can't even bend his feet in them! I've even had a random person in a store ask where his shoes were. haha... He absolutely struggles with walking (assisted) when he's in shoes. I feel bad for him and take them right off.

If they're not walking outside, why do they need shoes??

  • I didn't start walking until 16 months. That is, IMO, more on the "late side" but I wouldn't even expect DS to start walking until 14 months.

I am not putting him in shoes until he's walking around outside.

  • Babies don't need shoes to learn to walk... that's crazy! WTH did babies do back in the day?

Anyways, I bought LO some Stride Rites cuz he's walking and it's starting to get cold outside. If it were still summer I'd just let him go barefoot. My dr thinks babies learn to walk much better with out shoes because they can feel uneven surfaces and textures.

  • DS never wears shoes and was walking at 11 months. That being said, EVERY baby book and the like tells you barefoot is best so their feet grip and move naturally. MIL is flat out wrong.

  • 1. 12 months is by no means on the later side of the curve.

    2. I understand that experts basically agree - keep shoes OFF their feet to allow them to learn to walk properly.

this.  my ds is barefoot all the time and started walking at 7 months.  dont rush it. life is much easier before they walk.  really let lo take his time and enjoy it.  you will miss this.  anytime up to 18 months is normal. tell your mil to back off.  real shoes willactually hurt your lo now and could cause development problems in his feet.

  • Uh, the walking milestone is 9-18 months.  I'd say 12 months is average.  No baby in my family has walked before 14 months and none of us were labeled behind and no one was screaming "OMG!  EI!  EI!".

My friends with babies who are just starting to walk all say their kids fall wearing shoes so they leave them barefoot or in socks.  I can't imagine learning to walk essentially wearing boards on my feet, so Finn is always barefoot or wearing socks.  We have Robeez for when he needs shoes.

  • I don't wear shoes (or socks) in my house, so why should my kids?

12 months isn't "late" on the curve either. Neither of mine are walking. Tell your MIL to shove it.

I agree with k8, as always.

12 months is not late, and shoes are not required for walking.

  • Babies learn to walk better WITHOUT shoes/socks. They are able to grasp the floor/walking surface better with bare toes, so keep LO barefoot unless it's cold. If you want to cover LO's feet, use socks or maybe soft soled shoes. BUT, the less you put on those little feet the better!
