Settle an argument for DH and me

When you are playing checkers and have a player who is not kinged, can he jump backwards on the second hop of a double jump or do both hops of a double jump have to go forward?

    It's ok...it was an argument between DH and DS during a heated game.  I tried to side with DS but apparently lost.

    So I played chess with DS instead.  And lost again.
