We are going to a birthday party for my friend's 1 year old tomorrow. WTH do I get? I have no idea what kind of toys she already has. Would an outfit be lame?
walmart has a shopping cart with play food for $10 and a big tall box of mega bloks for $10... and they have a lenient return/exchange policy (with or without a gift receipt)
Take a chance. Take a risk. Take the initiative. Make your wishes a reality and make your dreams come true!
I've done outfits for the upcoming season whatever that happens to be at the time. Just remember to include the gift receipt in case the size does not end up working.
If you don't want to get an outfit, you could get a few books or arts and crafts type gifts. I never get arts and crafts gifts for DD, but I would love to get stuff like that.
ETA: To clarify.
Our first baby girl, Lucia Joy, joined us on April 1, 2010!
My daughter loved the hand clapper that my aunt attached to the top of her gift as a bow. I think she found it at the dollar store. Amazing it was a huge hit. That and her little cousin made a card and attached some bells to it.
Puzzles & books are always great gifts.
As a parent, my favorite gift was the cute target piggy and $10 worth of quarters to go towards her college savings fund. I loved it and my daughter loved shaking it.

This is one reason I like them for gifts. However, clothes and books are awesome, just make sure clothing size is good. I have a friend who already got C some 12 month size, and he can fit into very few of those and mostly wears 18mth already.

Get something small like a few books and get a GC. Thats personally what I like best so when we need something I have the money. Clothes are nice but I got a lot of stuff not my style and wrong size/season. DD is almost 21 months and still fits into 18 months easily.
