Toddlers: 24 Months+

2 kids, 3 years apart: double stroller or no?

Wondering if I should get a double stroller or not? DS will be almost 3 when LO #2 arrives. Will he really be in the stroller that much longer, or could I just wear #2 in a carrier and keep DS inthe stroller until he outgrows it? I currently have the BOB and LOVe it...but the double is around $670...and I don't want to spend the money if I only get a few months out of it! Thoughts? TIA!

  • We have never needed it. DS doesnt really ride in the stroller anymore. If he is tired he sits on the front of the Bob that we have. Never been an issue.

  • maybe a sit n stand?  DS still rides in the stroller at over 3.5, but I do a lot of power walking and make him sit in it.  He also likes it when we go places like fairs and the zoo.  I have a double that is a single or double (the city select).  He also has to do what ever DS2 does and if he is in the stroller DS1 wants to be too.

  • I had another mom tell me that her three year old rides on the front of the single BOB too and he fits great and likes it. He can hop on and off when he wants. I have the BOB too and I'm going to try to keep DS#2 in the ergo until summer when DS #1 is 3 and then we'll try to just use our single BOB. I wouldn't invest in a double unless you plan on having more kids soon.
  • DS hasn't really used the stroller since he turned 2.

  • I had the same question!  DD will be 3y1w when new baby is born.  I was considering on of thos little "step stool w/ wheels" thins that you hook onto your single stroller (on the back legs, below the handle).  the older kiddo can stand on it and it rolls right along wirth the stroller.  I definately won't be buying a double, but like a PP said, it'd be nice for my older child to have a place to ride if we are at a fair..etc.  Even if it's standing up, it's a break from walking.

Anyone have one of those?  Like it?

  • I wouldn't get one.  Like you said, the baby would prefer to be worn than ride in a stroller anyway.  Even my 7 month old loves to be worn in the beco butterfly.  We have an uppababy vista with the rumble seat that attaches, but haven't used the rumble seat in a few months.

We're going to the zoo next week so we'll see if he needs the stroller or not, but I don't plan on taking the extra seat.

I used the heck out of our sit & stand for a good couple of years.  My oldest was 2.5 when DD#2 was born- around 3 when we really started using it (I mostly wore my youngest at first so I could have both hands free).  I got mine off of Craigslist super cheap- it was a Joovy Caboose.  The only 'complaint' I have about it was that it was kind of heavy, but certainly manageable.  I've heard that Joovy has an ultralight model as well though.  My oldest loved sitting in her special seat.  It also had a strap on it that could be used if necessary.

  • DD is 3 now and we hardly use the stroller with her, to be honest. So I wouldn't buy a new stroller for a few months. You can always carry the LO and have your DS in the stroller, whenever you need to. My DD prefers her bike anyway.
  • I say no to the double. I know a few people with children the same ago difference, and the 3yr old doesnt like to be in the stroller unless they are walking a lot for ect the zoo or all day at the mall...
  • I would say no to a double stroller. DD hardly ever sits in the stroller anymore. We recently went to Italy and we walked a lot so she was in the stroller at that time. But we carried DS around in a Baby Bjorn and now that he's a bit bigger he can go in the Ergo.

  • I am in the minority, but we use the crap out of our double, but we also walk a lot for long distances and go to a lot of festivals and such.  I don't use it as much now, but I still use it 2-3 times a week.
  • Mine are 3 years apart and I love our double.

  • I wouldn't but my DD rarely uses a stroller.  We did a theme park the entire day and did not even bring the stroller in!  Thank goodness DH carried her when she got tired, lol!

  • I would go with the BOB/Carrier plan and maybe get an inexpensive or used Sit & Stand for those times (theme park, travel, etc.) that a 3 year old might not be able to last all day. That's my plan... oh! and we have two umbrella strollers if we wanted to go that route, as well.

  • It's different for every kid. My 3 1/2 year old hasn't been in stroller since he was 2, so we do not need one. I know most kids stay in a stroller for longer though.
  • I am planning to use the carrier and our BOB. DS will be 3 1/2 when DC#2 is born and he is already pretty much done with the stroller.  I did look into the boards that attach for the toddler to stand on, but my DS is nearly at the weight limit for those now, so by next spring it would be useless.

Our bike trailer converts into a stroller and we have a wagon, if both need to ride.
