I had it on the side for the longest time. I have just moved it to the middle so my boys have more room for each of them. Plus this way they can help entertain Ladybug no matter who is in the car without having to lean out of their seatbelts too far.
behind the passenger seat, per the vehicle manual. the center back has a flip up armrest thing for the other two back passengers, guess that's why they want it on the side. I do have to move the front passenger seat up a little to accomodate it, so no super talls can sit up front now.

Ours is in the middle. It doesn't fit behind our seats without eating the dashboard/steerling wheel.
Mine fit better on the side behind the driver, in DH's car it fit behind the passenger.
