There is an epidemic of whooping cough going around here.....I think its mostly older kids who's immunizations have worn off....but now Audrey has a really bad cough....its bad. She's been immunized, but if the epidemic is THAT bad, I'm not sure the immunization will protect her that much, right?
So....what are the signs I need to watch for. She's running a fever of about 102. She's coughing a lot. her nose is touch runny but not much. She's just a mess she's so tired and can't sleep....and DAMN the stupid drug companies for saying kids under 4 can't have cough syrup...my DD needs something I think.
Any advice/input is greatly appreciated!
Re: Tell me about whooping cough? I'm worried about Audrey.
A doctor can prescribe cough medicine, just can't use over the counter. DD just got over bronchitis. She took zythromax.
Whooping cough has a VERY distinct sound. Sort of like a goose. I know this because the woman near me at work had it gfor 3 weeks last year and that was all I heard all day.
I didn't think you could get whooping cough if you've been immunized against it.
When I was little, I got a strain of whooping cough that you can get if you're vaccinated. It's called para pertussis. The hallmark is cough spasms where you can't breathe and often you end up coughing to the point of vomiting.
If you're really worried, I'd check in with the ped and see if they want to listen to her chest. How many days of fever?
And fwiw, my ped's recs for Alec's cough the other night were humidifier, Vicks, elevating the bed and a little Tylenol. Hope she feels better.
God I love the Internet. This is kind of gross, though, but you can hear what it sounds like:

sulla, that rocks, but dammmmnnnnn, it brought tears to my eyes for that kid! SERIOUSLY! That cough is HORRIBLE and the gasping for air....omg, I would die if my kid was doing that!
Audrey does NOT sound like that.....
I feel MUCH better now!
You want to feel really bad? I was 7 years old and at sleepaway camp when I got sick. It was so scary. I totally remember what it felt like -- the not being able to breathe, the barfing. I even remember I took little pink pills and then would always throw them up after a coughing fit.
But she might have bronchitis or something, so maybe check in with the ped and see if they want to see her...
Here's poor little Sulla, inserted for dramatic effect.
