Too Late to Get Flu Shot?

So because of all of the recent posts about the flu shot, it started a discussion between my DH and I last night.  My doctor never said that I needed to get it, basically saying since I wouldn't really be pregnant during the majority of the flu season, he didn't think there was a reason for me to get it.  However, after reading that the flu shot can actually help develop antibodies in our LO, I am thinking that I should get the shot.  But now I am worried that I have waited too long because I am due 10/21.  Does that still give me enough time to get the shot and actually make it effective for my LO?  I see my doctor on Monday, and may actually just call the office today to see what they say.  But I would love your input!

Re: Too Late to Get Flu Shot?

  • I believe I've read if you get it two weeks before birth, it can help LO. Double check with your doctor but it certainly won't hurt either of you to get it now.

  • I'm having a c section on 10/11 and I got my flu shot on Monday.   I would get it!
  • I would totally still get it. You have 21 days 'til your due date (which is plenty of time). If you plan on breastfeeding, the antibodies are also transferred to LO via breast milk. GL!

  • Even if you don't pass on the antibodies through your pregnancy, you can still help protect your baby after birth. Your baby can't get the shot (until 6 months old) and what would be a really minor illness in you could be a really devastating illness in LO. Plus, if you are breastfeeding you can still pass on antibodies that way. That being said, I am due 10/23 and got mine on Wednesday.

  • Thanks ladies!  I will call my doctor today and see about either getting it today or Monday at my scheduled appointment.  I just want to make sure I'm doing what's best for my LO!
  • I agree with everyone else - I got mine at my 37 week appt & I'm delivering at 39 weeks. It's worth it. Though bear in mind you may have a bit more of a reaction now than you normally do with a flu shot. I had a moderate headache & some general joint achiness for about 12-18 hours after I got the shot this time & usually don't have any reaction at all.
  • I just got mine on Tuesday. I realize that my lo probably won't get all of the benefits right now but I have heard that they can get it through breastmilk as well.
  • I'm due 10/10 and my doctor gave both H and I the flu shot on Wednesday (they just got the first shipment in).  She said its much better to get now than later, esp since the baby can come late.

  • I got mine when I was 37w2d because my doctor said it takes two weeks to give the baby its immunities. I figured that even if he does not get anything from it between that or breastfeeding, I want my husband and I to get it anyways to prevent us from contracting it and spreading it to the baby during the flu season.

  • I just got mine this past Monday at my 38 week appt. I'm sure it's fine, just so long as you get it!

  • I asked my doc today (37 w 2 d) and she said to get it now!  I was going to wait until after the baby.  So, I went to CVS.  Done.
