Halloween: candy or junk (favor suggestions)

I would rather not get a bunch of candy for the little kids I know, so I was thinking about ordering some trinkets (glow bracelets, halloween pens, etc), but then I was feeling bad about buying MIC crap that will break or not be used for very long....

What are some EF halloween ideas of  favors for  little ones?

  • Mini bags of pretzels?

Pumpkin seeds to plant for next year? (I think that would be a dud in the eyes of the kids, though lol.)

    Pencils/erasers? (junk)

If you know them, you could give out homemade goodies or favors.

  • You could always just do pieces of dark chocolate. It's still candy, but not as bad as say, tootsie rolls and the like.

If it's for kids you know, you could make something, like toasted pumpkin seeds or popcorn balls.

Or, you could do some sort of trick-or-treating pit stop schtick, like mini costume pageants or a take your picture with *insert spooky yard creature*. That way you don't have to give out candy or junk at all, but don't end up being that house on the block that kids avoid because you give out "weird" stuff.

  • I'd do little bags of pretzels or pencils or something. I don't count pencils as junk because they need them in school.

  • We generally have two bins of Halloween stuff:

    1. Junk candy

    2. Stickers, temp tattoos, Yummy Earth lollipops for kids who are A) too little B) not allowed C) allergic.

  • The kids in our neighborhood love junk... meaning tattoos, silly bands (rubber bands shaped like things), or even stickers, or the slimy eyeballs.  We have also given out individual beverages before and they were a hit.  (Maybe juice boxes)  The kids said it was perfect because they got thirsty running around to different houses.  My kids would love glow bracelets too... so that is a great idea.

  • I refuse to be the house that doesn't give out candy, lol, so Yummy Earth suckers are our choice.  You can buy them in large quantities on Amazon.

  • boxes/packets of raisins or craisins
certificates to Wendy's or other restaurants for kiddie sized treat (still sugary, but somehow in my mind a small step better than candy)
    mini pack of stickers
