First Blood Work Question

I have to go get my first round of blood work drawn today at lunch and some women have told me they really take a lot of blood. I am doing this on my lunch break and have to come back to work after, so now I am nervous I won't feel well with all the blood they take. Can anyone let me know how it was with your first round of blood work? Do you think I'll be fine to come back to work? I can't miss any more work as I used all my sick time last week when I had the flu. :(

Re: First Blood Work Question

  • it's a couple of vials, but not like you are giving a pint or something. Plus you won't be fasting first, so you'll probably be fine.

  • I had blood work done for the first time yesterday & it was fine.  Like PP said, it's only 5 or 6 small viles, it's not like when you donate blood.  Have a little something in your belly to steady you first.

  • They took about 7 vials of blood from me. They gave me water to drink while they did it though since I got pretty thirsty. I say bring something like a gatorade with you to help you feel ok after in case you get woozy or anything.

  • Yeah, b/w blood taking is a lot less than donating.  After donating I'm sometimes more tired, but I am always fine to go back to work.

For b/w I didn't even notice a difference.  Make sure you're well hydrated before hand, stay hydrated after, and if you feel woozy, drink some juice!

  • Thanks ladies! I have had my blood drawn many times before, but people were freaking me out making me think they were draining my whole body... LOL I have an OJ to take with me to drink and I'll definitely be eating something before I go. Thanks again! I feel much better about it now!

  • Your increased blood-volume and water intake should help with that a good bit. I had several taken and it didn't phase me at all. Make sure and tank up on water though so your blood will flow.

  • Also be careful my first blood work i didnt know they need urine, so just in case make sure you have to go potty while your there.  It took me extra 45 mins for them to get urine.

  • Depending on what tests your doctor does and if they can combine them, it's like 4-8 viles, which is really nothing.  If you are really concerned, make sure you drink a lot of water today and eat before you go.  Bring more fluids and a snack with you to eat right after.  I'm sure you will be just fine.

  • I had a lot of blood drawn, but I needed a lot of different panels done.  I did not react very well and was pretty close to passing out.  However, after drinking juice and relaxing about 10 minutes, I was fine to drive the 25 minutes home.

So even if it doesn't go well, you should be fine to go back to work.

  • You'll be fine. I have had several vials taken before for things and never had a problem. I can't even donate blood b/c I'm underweight, and I've always been fine for blood draws.
  • Thanks ladies for the advice and support! It really made me feel better! I just got back from giving blood and it went perfect. The lady that drew my blood was sweet as can be and it was an easy process. I ate Mickey D's after because it was the only thing that sounded good...and it was delish! lol Thanks again ladies...glad that is over! :)
