Toddlers: 24 Months+

Still in crib!

DS is 2yr 3months old and still in a crib. I know its going to be time to transition soon, but I'm kind of dreading it. DS actual room is downstairs (ours is upstairs, and he sleeps in a room that connects to ours right now.. and in March our new addition will be sleeping in the room he's in now)

I'm just worried about him getting out of bed several times at night, leaving his room etc. We will definitely have a video monitor in his room so hopefully that will help. I was just wondering if anyone was in a similar situation with LO's room far away, and how did the transition from crib to bed go?

  • I might wait to transition. I know a baby is coming but unless you don't plan on having the LO sleep in a basinette for a bit, I think you have time and maybe can stretch him closer to 3 when he is old enough to really understand bedtime rules.  We plan on keeping DD in the crib for as long as possible, until she can ask for a bed. I just don't think she's ready for the big girl bed (and neither am I...I love my sleep too much!).

  • I agree, I love my sleep! DS usually wakes up around 7-7:30, then talk to himself for a while lol. I'm so afraid to give that up! The only thing about waiting to transition, is I'm afraid that the new baby will keep DS up at night..I guess we'll figure it out! lol.

This!   Ds is the same age as your lo, and we're not going to move him to a toddler bed, until we feel like he is ready.  Currently, he loves his crib, and sleeps 10-12 hours at a time.  We can lay him down,  he'll tell us night-night  and go right to sleep without a fuss.  Why mess with a good thing.   Once we start potty training,  the toddler bed will be inevitable, but we're not starting that for a while either.

  • I think this is a total :read your child: situation.  my daughter is over 3 and still in a crib b/c she sleeps like a dream and she's not interested in a bed yet.  I plan on switching her only when i need the crib for the next one (within the next 9-12 mths.)

I felt bad about it but just last night i was reading in one of the 1000 parenting mags i have that said there's not need to rush the bed.  3 years old is normal for a crib unless the child him/herself is interested.

Could you move the crib to the other room? That way he could get used to being farther away, but still have the comfort of the crib. And then maybe transition him to a toddler bed when the new LO is older?  I'm due in March & we are planning on leaving DS (25 months now) in his crib until the new LO is 4 months or so.  I've been looking at bassinets that go up to 6 months. GL!

We actually do have a crib in his downstairs room. I guess it is ok to transition him down there before the baby comes, then later on convert it to a toddler bed. For some reason, I was just thinking that this had to be done before the baby comes. But I guess there's no rush! Thanks everyone.

  • DS2 JUST transitioned into his toddler bed 2 mos ago- he will be 3 years old this month.  We only switched him when we did because he was climbing out of his crib, otherwise, I'd have waited.  Both of our DDs were 3 when we moved them into beds.  What is your rush?  As long as your DS is not attempting to climb out, leave him in there.  They feel safer in the crib and once you put them into a bed, it's a WHOLE NEW WORLD (and not in a good way!).  Be prepared for lots of getting out of bed just because he can :)  My advice- leave him in the crib as long as you can!  If you have to buy another crib for him or the new baby, DO IT!  That's what we did for DD2 since DD1 was still in her crib when DD2 was born (DD1 was 27 mos at that point).  Don't rush it unless DS is climbing out- then it's a safety matter.  GL!
