Are there/will there be midwives at Issaquah Swedish?

Does anyone know?  I "graduated" from my RE yesterday (whom I loved, and many of you recommended - thanks!).  When I called the Center for Women's Health at Evergreen to make an appointment with my midwife (who I see for annuals & my thyroid management), I was devastated to learn that they are basically breaking up the midwife part of the practice.

Starting November, there won't be enough midwives to have a full-on midwife group.  The midwives will be put into a call rotation with the OBs, so I *might* get a midwife when I go into labor, but I might get an OB.  I want to go natural and would really feel better about attempting it with a midwife (and I don't think we can afford a doula).

I live about 5 minutes from the new Swedish, but it's my understanding that only the Ballard Swedish has a midwife group.  Do any of you know if the new Swedish will have them, and starting when?  Our baby is due in May.  Thanks!

Re: Are there/will there be midwives at Issaquah Swedish?

  • Hi! First, Congratulations on your BFP!!!

I'm actually with the Ballard Swedish MW group and I live about ten minutes outside of Issaquah. For now, from my understanding, the Labor & Delivery/Postpartum center will go in at the end of November. I believe the plan is to just have the one MW group.

However, the MW group is worth the once a month drive. I'm 31 weeks and won't start seeing them twice a week until I'm 34 weeks.  I can tell you that the MW's at Ballard are pro natural birth and very flexible.

Feel free to PM me if you have questions about them. H&H nine months!

  • I choose Overlake OBGYN midwives because they plan to deliver at Swedish in Issaquah. They have an office up there too. So far I'm very happy with them. There are only 2 of them and you see both, every other appointment.

  • Thank you, ladies!  It sounds like I have a couple other options to explore.  I sure wish there were more midwives around here!

  • Hi! I am also due in May want to deliver at the new Issaquah Swedish. I currently have an OB, but I would like to switch - have you had any luck picking a care provider you like?

My first baby was born out of state, and my second was born with the Midwives at Evergreen.  I would love to use a midwife again, but the only midwives I could find at the new Swedish were with the Overlake OBGYN group, and I haven't heard the best things about that group in general.

  • I just delivered my son on Tuesday at Swedish Issaquah with the MW at Overlake OBGYN. I have mixed reviews of the hospital but loved my MWives. Both MWwere what I was expecting for my care. My recommendation would be that the hospital will be a great place to have a baby.....in a few months, maybe a year. They need to get their ish together a little bit more. and they seem to have some trouble finding the right nurses. Coming from Swedish Seattle where yea it is a "baby factory" the nurses have to be much more prepared and they seem to have a higher expectation of care from their staff. Everyone was very nice but you could tell they were not of the same training. Many had questions, repeated many procedures, asked the same questions and just seemed lost. They didnt know things, were slowed by technology and were often looking or acting confused  I know they've been slower than they hoped so if they pick up maybe they will learn more quickly and it will be a different place. That's my 2 cents!!

  • Thanks for the review.  I wondered how it went, but was going to wait a few weeks to ask :)  I imagine they will increase in volume as the months go by. Hopefully it is all smooth by September :)
