Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Feed every 2-3 hours?

DS is 1 week old. He is starting to sleep 2-3hour stretches. Just woke him from a 3.5 hour nap. I always heard that when they are this young, you should make sure they feed every 2-3 hours. However, the pedi told me the other day to not set my alarm. If he goes over 3 hours when sleeping, just keep sleeping with him...not to stress. She said he is nursing well enough not to worry. Anyone else heard this advice? I'm worried about letting him go to four hours when he is this young.

Re: Feed every 2-3 hours?

  • Yep, you're pediatrician is saying the same thing that I've heard. If he's back up to his birth weight, then let him asleep as long as he can. DS pulled his first 7 hour stretch at 4 weeks. He was 8 pounds at birth and 13? at his 2 month appointment, so he's definitely not missing the extra feedings.

  • While I would almost always say to trust your pediatrician, I think if your LO is only a week old, he needs to eat every 2 to 3 hours around the clock.  I want to say my girls didn't start waking me up in the middle of the night until around 2 weeks old or so.  Until then, I set my alarm and woke them every 3 hours during the night.

  • Yes LO pedi said as long as he is eating well and gaining weight it is not nessesary to wake him for feedings. However I have been pumping when he miss a feeding so my milk supply doesnt drop.

  • I never set an alarm to feed.  DS was always good at making his needs known.  I think he slept for 4 hours once at that age...but it sure didn't happen often.  I wouldn't stress unless it happens a lot.

  • I never wake a baby to eat. It's not worth the disaster than ensues. I tried until my LO gained her birthweight back and half the time she didn't want to eat anyways. It was such a waste.

Any full term healthy baby knows when they need to eat or sleep and will make up for either or later on.

  • I live by the philosophy never wake a sleeping baby.  They will not starve themselves.  If they are hungry they will wake up.  My LO has been sleeping 4-5 hours stretches since birth and she is growing and gaining weight just fine.

  • We got the same advice at that age. We were told to let him sleep as long as he wants at night, but that we shouldn't let him go more than 4 hours during the day to avoid him getting days/nights mixed up. It never ended up being an issue though, 4 hours was the longest he has gone day or night.
