Over the counter sleep aids

I'm having serious sleeping issues.  I don't have a problem getting to sleep but I wake up between 2 and 3 every.single.night and am unable to get back to sleep.  Has anyone tried any otc sleep aids?  Do they help you sleep through the night?  Is it hard to wake up in the morning?  Are you groggy the next day?  If you have one that has worked for you can you please recommend it?  Thanks!

Re: Over the counter sleep aids

  • I like melatonin.  When I take something like Tylenol PM, I always feel groggy the next day, but melatonin just gives me a deep, refreshing sleep.  I do tend to have very vivid dreams when I take it.

  • DH was the same- it's probably not a melatonin deficiency since you can get to sleep. He's had very good luck w/ Poliquin's magnesium w/ triptophan. Good (yes, biased) info:

  • Someone posted about this a few weeks ago and several people, myself included, recommended melatonin. I bought mine at Sprouts, but I'm sure there's lots of places that sell it. It really helped me without making me feel groggy at all. I hope you find something that works--sleep issues are no fun.

  • I've used melatonin and liked it. I have to take it several hours before I go to sleep. Please use caution in taking Tylenol PM. A couple of years ago, a family friend lost all his memory and was eventually diagnosed with early Alzheimer's. It turned out that Tylenol PM was the culprit and totally jacked with something neurological. He took it two or three times a week. He's gotten much better since he stopped taking Tylenol PM, but still has some memory issues. SCARY.

  • I use two supplements that work well! Melatonin, and/or taking magnesium + calcium with dinner. I've taken it post dinner as well, but it absorbs better w/food.
  • Ditto others that recommended melatonin.

  • I have severe insomnia and have taken almost everything on the market both prescription and OTC. I've finally found 2 things that work for me: melatonin (which I tried after hearing the recs on this board) and Hyland's  C a l m s F o r te. I trust the brand since many of DD's "medicines" are from them (they're all homeopathic) so that's why I looked into it. Both of these things work really well for me. I usually alternate them every other night. Hope you get some rest soon! Sleep issues suck!
