Trying to Get Pregnant

Anyone TTC while BFing?

How many months PP are you?  Have your periods returned?  Are they regualar?  Are there any tips you can share?  I am EBFing for 3 1/2 months now and have had 3 regular periods.  What is your experience?

Re: Anyone TTC while BFing?

  • I am Smile  I had a mirena until about 2 weeks ago, so I didn't have a PP AF until 2 days after removal.  This is our first cycle TTC #3, so it seems "normal" so far... But I won't really know until I O (hopefully in the next few days...)

Only tip I have... I can't really temp since DS still wakes at night to nurse, so I'm using CBEFM/OPKs to check for O until he weans.  I'm also checking CP/CM around my predicted O time to look for changes.  GL!  Sorry I can't be more helpful.

  • I am down to bfing once a day.  I just got my first pp AF at 13 months. I am very surprised that my charting this month looks very similar to my pre-pregnancy charts, but who knows what the rest of the month will look like.

  • I am. I'm on cycle 3, I  charted my first and current and this cycle is my first truly active ttc. I got AF back around 10m PP. My first was normal from before DS, my 2nd and 3rd have been longer. I don't really have any advice, except these ladies here know what they're talking about!

  • I completely weaned my 14 month old about 10 days ago. I got AF back at 5 months and exclusively breastfeed, never FF. I think I got AF back so early because at 4.5 months I had to be away from my little peanut longer than 4 hours at a shot (I was studying for my licensing exam) so that caused AF to return (IMO). Good Luck to you!!

  • Hmm...ok.  I was hoping to see a pattern so that I could predict how things will work out for me, but I guess that was wishful (and impatient) thinking!  Does anyone think it's weird that I gave birth on June 13, I EBF, and bed share and I still got my first AF on July 15?  Second was in August and third was in September.  I just have never heard of AF returning so quickly especially under my circumstances.  I hope that doesn't mean anything weird is happening with me (or my supply for that matter.)

  • I'm still BFing at10 months, my first AF was in April & I was EBF then.  My cycles started out longer than pre-pregnancy, but have since started to shorten back to 'normal'.  I'm also having trouble temping since DD's wake up time isn't consistent.  We're going to try the EOD method for a few months and see how that works out for us.

I don't think it's odd to have your period back right after birth (I know too many women who have gotten pregnant before their 6 week PP dr appt), but I'm definitely not an expert.  My supply wasn't affected by AF coming back, but my doctor had told me the best way to keep up a supply is to keep BFing.

A mom in my BMB got AF 6 weeks PP and is still going strong nursing her LO. She isn't ttc, so no help there, but all is not lost Smile

  • If you've already had 3 regular periods, I'd say your chances are decent!

I had to totally wean because I didn't get AF at all while BFing. Even after weaning it took a while to come back. Sad

  • I am!  Sorry you got AF so soon after birth :(  But if you are TTC, I guess that's a good thing.

I got AF back at 8 months PP.  He really took to solids at about 7-8 months so I think that is the reason.  As far as tips, I researched TTC while BFing, and found some sources on taking Vitex and B6 - so I am taking both.  This cycle already looks much better than my last.  But could be coincidence, obviously.  Good luck!

  • Yeah I was shocked to get it back so quickly.  We were going to wait until our daughter was about 6 months old, but when I got my period we just figured why not now?  This is the first time we are actually ttc because the first one was an oopsie :)  I'm actually really nervous about trying.  It's a lot of pressure!  Also, do you mean vitamin B6?  What's Vitex?  Are these supposed to increase the chances of conception while bfing?  TIA!

I'm intrigued. Are those something that you should ask your doctor about? FF thinks I O'd early, but I'm not comvinced so I'd like to see what else can be done. Thanks! :)

  • Yes, I meant Vitamin B6.

If you want to research Vitex yourself and make your own decisions, here is one link - from kellymom.com (one of my fav breastfeeding resources) ~
