Are initials a dealbreaker?

I recently posted about using the name Mae and asked for suggestions on a middle name.  We were liking Christine, but also loved some suggestions for "A" names such as Abigail and Amelia.  I am torn now since these names would create the initials MAD.  I would love some opinions...would I be crazy to do this to my child?

Re: Are initials a dealbreaker?

  • I don't think this is a big deal at all ...plus MAD isn't bad, now if it was going to be PMS I would rethink.   image

  • MAD is fine.  PMS, BJ, FU, EZ--not good.

  • One of my best friends growing up had MAD as initials and it never bothered her. I wrote her notes in middle school to MAD, it was kind of a cute inside joke.

  • Those initials would not be a deal breaker for me. It's got to be either obscene or sexual before I would even consider it an issue.

  • The initials MAD are ok. My sisters initials are TLC. If the were going to be A$$, PMS, something like that I'd side eyed.
  • I don't think that's bad at all. The only reason initials would be a deal breaker for me was if they were an acronym for something inappropriate - STD, PMS, etc. I eliminated all B names from our list because our last name starts with M and I can't for the life of me get past having the initials "BM" even with a middle name.

  • My best friend growing up had two middle names so her initials were REAR. She had quite the personality though & just used it as an interesting conversation piece which turned out to be pretty amusing with her wit.

I agree with the ladies above, MAD isn't inappropriate

  • Mine were IBM before I got married. Never bothered me. PMS, STD, BJ etc. would be mean to give to your LO... but MAD? Nah!

  • Thanks, everyone!  I agree with not using something along the lines of PMS or other derogatory combinations, but I was on the fence with this one.  I thought it wouldn't be the worst thing ever, but it really helps to have positive input from others.  Smile
  • I don't think MAD is a dealbreaker, but if I liked another middle name as much to the "A" name, I would probably make a switch...

  • I don't think it's bad at all.  I knew someone with the initials PAN.  We thought it was cute.
  • With initials, it depends on how bad they are...

    MAD isn't a big deal, I don't think.

  • If I have a boy, there is a good chance that his initials will be JAW.

  • I only rule out obscene initials.  But DH's name is BJ, so that one doesn't bother me so much.

I mentioned liking the combination Mary Alice (Mary is a family name and Alice is DH's favourite girl name) today, but DH ruled it out because the initials would be MAN.  I might avoid that combination as well.

  • My initials growing up were HEC. The only one who picked on me about it was my mother. She'd tell people all the time, "well I shoulda known she was goin' to be a hellion when we had already named her and realized her initials spell HEC." Got so old.

I think as long as it doesn't spell something embarrassing, it's fine. One of my high school teachers told me, "At least your initials aren't G.I.Z., like mine..."

Now my initials spell HER, and who's going to make fun of HER.

  • Well, mine are VD - that was a bit embarassing in high school but became a lot funnier as the years went on... i have a friend who only calls me by my initials. Gotta love her!!
