Working Moms

WWUD? work situation

So, I am fortunate to have a long maternity leave. Sept-Jan. I know this is alot more than many working moms get. I was just given an opportunity to make some decent money to do some part-time online mentoring for teachers over the next few months, which means I can still be at home. I am struggling to decide whether I should do this since a maternity leave meant my one time to NOT do any work, but on the other hand its pretty good money. I do not desparately need the money but it would certainly help to have it to put towards debts, etc. I try to go back and forth on the pros/cons and am so indecisive but need to decide asap. My husband basically says its up to me to decide. hmmm What would you do?

  • Check to see if you can actually do this and not violate your work place's policy during maternity leave.  It's not worth getting fired from your full-time gig.

  • Depends how many hours a week would it require?  Are the hours flexible?  Do you plan to work when your DH is home to watch LO, or are you hoping to squeeze it in during naptimes?

  • I second the PP?s comment.  My company?s policy says while on leave you cannot be working another job and if you are found to be doing so it can result in instant termination.

This.  And if there is  no policy either way, I would discuss it with your HR rep or whoever is in charge of maternity leave policies.  Personally, I would err on the side of not taking the job, because working for another employer while on maternity leave could be viewed as underhanded.

  • Thanks ladies for the forewarning on double dipping. I am checking into it. I figured since I already work for a school district and this other job is within that district that it would be okay. We will see.
