How much homework does your kindergartener have?

My boys are getting a packet once a week to complete of literacy and something once a week for math.  They have also been getting handwriting every night as well as math worksheets and literacy worksheets every night.  They have 2-3 things to complete every night.  When I taught I did the rule of 10 minutes per grade so I was a bit thrown off by this much every night.  Is this the norm?

  • DD brings back new books to read each night and then gets some kind of homework in her "Friday folder" that she does over the weekend.

  • They attend a full day program.  1/2 of the day is a developmental *special need* kindergarten and the other 1/2 day is typical.  They are getting homework from both classes as well.
  • DD has 1 sheet per week.  They have a letter of the week and color or write or cut & paste things that start with that letter.  DD doesn't see it as homework, she likes it!
  • In K it was typically one worksheet a night (sometimes math, sometimes reading/letters, sometimes handwriting), and then 10 minutes of reading.
  • When DD was in K she got a Friday Folder every week. It was her homework for the weekend.

  • Ava gets a packet every Monday. It has 4 pages in it (M-Th) and you return the packet Friday. No homework over the weekend.

  • Cam gets homework on Wed night and it's due on Thursday.

This week was the first week and it was simply a handwriting sheet where she had to trace her name and last initial and then write her name and last initial (two more times).

  • When he was in kindie, he had almost zero homework.  Now in first grade, he has homework M-Th.  But his homework is very simple, math related problems and they ask that we read either to them or with them for 20 minutes every day.

  • A packet of 6-8worksheets is sent home at the beginning of the month. It's optional if the child completes/returns. It's not mandatory.

  • None so far. She's in full day kinder.

  • Mon. through Thurs. they have this little notebook that is sent home and each day has something small. It usually takes DS less than 5 min. Twice a week they send the guided readers home and he reads those along with doing his homework.

  • In kinder, mine got about 4 stapled pieces of paper (front & back) every Friday that needed completion by the following Thursday.  A lot of it was writing/ tracing, and some math.  I thought it was kind of a lot- we had other stuff that came home as well to do.  I think a lot of it had to do w/the fact that her kinder teacher was finishing up her masters & her thesis was on something to do w/parental involvement in homework.

In her 1st grade class so far, her only homework is to 'ENJOY 20 minutes of reading every night!" (per her teacher)  She picks a book from school that she reads.  I am also starting the Harry Potter series with her, so we read some of that too.  I like this homework much better :)

  • DD1 gets a packet sent home every Monday and due back every Thursday. It has one or two books for her to read (very simple right now) and a poem worksheet with three sections. We do one section on the poem worksheet each night and she reads us a book a night. The sections take less than 5-10 minutes and are relatively easy but nice for me to see what they're working on at school. We read the books during our usual "book time" after showers and before bed with DD. Some nights, none of that happens, but no big deal. The teacher said at the beginning of the year, she doesn't want the homework back at all. If you want to do it, awesome. If you want to throw it in the bin, that's fine too. If the kids need extra help or work, she'll let us know. All that she asks is that we fill out the book log and let her know our concerns if we have any. Easy enough. I don't "believe in" homework in Kindy, but DD likes it and this makes sense, but I don't push it and sometimes we go off on a tangent like talking about how to write letters or something and don't get done what we're "supposed" to. DD is in a full day kindergarten.
  • None. I'd be really upset if my kid was bringing home that much work every day.  There's no need for that at their age!

This week they had a worksheet every night to practice writing their name.  They had a math project to measure the amount of water in different containers and write which had the most and which had the least.  The boys also had to practice their phone number on a worksheet where they were to write down the numbers in their phone number and color them on what looks like a phone.  Next, they had to complete 2 "all about me" pages, one for each teacher.  One was about them.  I asked them questions, they had to write their name and draw their family.  Talk about fun with an autistic kid...They had to draw a picture of  a kid in their class for the other teacher.

Last week they had to practice writing the letters "t/d/f/b" as well as their names, complete a connect the dots 1-20, one 1-10, and draw something that has numbers on it as well as practice their names every night.

  • The school that ds attended last year for kindergarten did not give any homework. It's actually their policy not to give homework at all in K-3.
  • That sounds excessive. DD gets a homework folder on Monday, turn in Friday. She usually gets it done in 2 nights. So if we'd space it out to 4 nights (Mon-Thurs), I guess it'd be no more than 5 min a night, max. I like that amount because it's just enough so that I know what's going on in the classroom, and it helps her open up about her day.

That homework sounds like the work they should be doing in the classroom.

  • We have an IEP meeting next week and I'm thinking of bringing it up then.  On top of their regular homework, Matthew was out last Friday and this Tuesday.  They sent home work that they did in the classroom for him.  He's sick right now and will miss tomorrow as well.  Friday he had a neurologist appointment and Tuesday he had a GI procedure at CHOP.  Right now he  has a fever and is coughing/saying his chest hurts.  He's not eating well either.  I know he's sick when he doesn't eat.
  • My 4 year old JK-er has approx 10 minutes of homework: reading/letters/fine motor.
promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • Yours sounds like a lot.

We get a packet of about 4-6 sheets for printing practice (get it on Monday and turn it in on Friday), a list of sight words for reading practice (each kid learns at their own pace and brings the list in to get tested on it when they are comfortable) and we have to read 15 minutes each night. He also gets a monthly art assignment that he is supposed to do with a parent each month based on a theme. Last month it was back to school. This month it is halloween.

  • dd gets a calendar each month... it has an activity listed each Mon-Fri and we check off what we do (don't turn in anything). the teacher asks that we do at least 3 homework assignments per week.  it's stuff like writing your name 3 times, or finding your bday on a calendar, or writing numbers 1-5  twice.  and then they send home math packets once a week that is just to reinforce what they've learned (don't turn back in)... they ask that we read nightly and the class gets to check out library books from the school library weekly.

in prek , dd got more worksheet stuff... but it's still the start of the year . who knows what she'll be getting soon?

  • Usually something that takes 2-3 minutes one night/week, plus reading. The reading is supposed to be sent home daily, but he only gets it one day/week. The reading is easy for him right now and they haven't done evaluations to place for reading groups yet.

We do our own work every night for however long he wants to (an hour or so plus an hour of books usually). He only has half day K so it's easy to find the time to fit the extras in at home.
