Trying to Get Pregnant

lurker with a charting question

I've been lurking for a week or so because I'm trying to learn more about charting. But I have a question that I haven't been able to figure out the answer to, so maybe you can help!

I have always been a REALLY light sleeper. I wake up, on average, maybe 3-4 times a night. I almost always get up to pee when I wake up, and then fall back asleep right away. It's the way I've always been and it's not a problem. But I've been looking into charting, and based on what I've read, it seems to me like that wouldn't work for me. I rarely sleep more than 3 hours in a row, like ever, so even if I set my alarm for the same time (like 3 am or whatever) every night, sometimes I might have been asleep for 2 hours before that, sometimes 1 hour...you get the point.

So my question is, is there a way to chart your temp if you wake up and get up to pee multiple times every night?

Thanks! :-)

Re: lurker with a charting question

  • You could pick a time that you're almost always asleep for 3 hours (even if it's 1AM) to set your alarm for & temp, otherwise I would just do the best you can.

  • I wake up frequently but don't actually get out of bed--if you can stay in bed and fall back to sleep quickly, it might not pose a problem. It's getting up and moving around that makes it more difficult. Give it a shot and see what happens-everyone is different and might not be as difficult as you think.

  • I am exactly the same way and I have not had any problems charting - my temps remain pretty consistent and I have had a clear temp shift each cycle.  For example, a few days ago I was expecting a low temp because of where I was in my cycle and my familiarity with my patterns, but I had a particularly bad night's sleep so I was very surprised to see that - regardless - my temp was exactly what I expected.

All of this doesn't mean that charting is not different for everyone, but you should see patterns after a few cycles charting.  If you find that your wakefulness is *your* normal, you should be able to chart just fine.  Good luck!

  • Honestly, I usually wake up at least once, if not twice throughout the night to go to the bathroom and go back to sleep. It has never messed with my temping. But that is just me also.

I temp at 6am. So if I do wake up at 5 or 5:30am and have to go to the bathroom, I do try to hold it until I temp at 6 or closer to it and then go pee.

So, do you set your alarm for a time in the middle of the night?

Thank you all for your help! I might just give it a try :-)

No - I temp at 6:15 am.  That is what time my alarm goes off M-F and I tend to wake up around that time on weekends (out of habit I guess), so I just temp and go back to sleep.  I often wake up between 4:00 and 5:00 am and am awake for a few minutes - has not affected my temps.  That doesn't mean you will have the same experience, I am just sharing my story so you know it is *possible* to successfully chart (check out my FF ticker if you want to see how drastic my shifts are) even if you wake up a lot.

  • Thanks! Now I have a few ideas to try. I usually get up at the same time on weekdays so I think I'll start by trying to temp then and just see what happens. I just had no idea if that was even feasible, but now I know it's worth a shot.
