Passed out and threw up after GTT Test :(

Did this happen to anyone else during their one hour?  I made it 55 minutes, then fell over in the waiting room and promptly starting barfing.  They still drew my blood at an hour, but I'm afraid the results will be off. It also made me paranoid about having gestational diabetes if I had such a strong reaction to the test.  The nurse said that it was probably the opposite and that I was hypoglycemic.  Any thoughts on this? Also, I CANNOT do the 3 hour - there's no way I'd be able to make it.  Has anyone heard of alternatives if I have to re-take the one hour or, even worse, take the 3 hour?

Re: Passed out and threw up after GTT Test :(

  • I am amazed they still took the blood draw.  I was told if I could not keep it down at least until after the blood draw the results would be skewed and I would be forced to retake it.  I was told this by the lab and I have seen a woman forced to retake it after she threw up.  The lab I go to is very particular though - they will not draw your blood even a minute early or late.  I always have to sit in the chair with a band around my arm and wait for the minute hand to reach the correct time.

I felt fine after the one hour with DD and failed.  I felt sick after the one hour with DS and passed.  From what I have seen on here I don't think you can tell if you passed or not from how you feel.  Some people feel fine and pass, others feel fine and fail.  It will be interesting to see if your OB makes you retake the one hour.

  • The lab said that because I had only thrown up 2 minutes before they took blood, it shouldn't affect my blood sugar levels.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed that that's true - I can't fathom having to do it again.  I was SO sick.
  • I passed out (but did not vomit) with my GTT for first born.... and I passed the test just fine.

  • I passed out during my 1-hour GTT, but I was able to keep the drink down.  My blood sugar was actually abnormally low (my count was only 60) and the doctor said that was probably why I reacted that way.  He didn't seem too concerned though, just told me to eat more frequently and try to get more protein.

  • Threw up and almost passed out 45 minutes into the fasting 2 hr. They could not continue it.

My midwife did not want me trying it again, so she ordered the A1C blood test and has taken my blood sugar at every appointment since as well as had me take it a few times at work to get a good range. There have been no abnormal numbers.
