Poor Baby Calf (NBR)

Until we close on our house next Friday, we live with my parents who live on my grandpa's farm. Tuesday morning my grandpa found a baby calf all alone. It's mom had it and then left didn't clean it up or feed it or anything. My grandpa has so many cows he doesn't even know which one is the mom. When I was in high school my brother and I took two baby calves and fed them every morning. So now my dad wants to feed this one, since my grandpa has so many cows he doesn't have time to feed this one. We went over yesterday to help him since he has been tube feeding it until last night. The poor baby is so depressed because he is all alone and is having the hardest time learning how to suck a bottle. It is so sad to see especially knowing I will be a mom in three months and couldn't imagine ever leaving my baby. I know cows are different, but it's still sad. At least my parents really want to keep the calf and take care of it and are excited because it will be born the same year as their first grandchild!

  • Poor thing. Don't feel to bad about him/her being alone, they get used to it pretty quick. If he won't use a bottle have you tried bucket feeding instead? If he'll suck on your finger just lower your hand into a bucket and then pull your finger out. They'll keep sucking and usually figure out in about 5 minutes they get milk that way. It's a different angle from nursing and just requires drinking instead. I wish you guys the best of luck!

  • It is a little sad but at the same I agree with a pp not to feel bad for the baby calf being alone. I wokred on a dairy farm for five years... on a dairy farm as soon as the calf is born we took them away from the mothers. We did it for a few reasons... one: to make sure the claf got the correct amount of nutrients and milk. Two: a lot of new borns were actually smushed by their mothers. Three: the mothers could actually get mastistus (dont know the real spelling of that sorry) if the baby calf doesnt suckle the right away. I know with beef farms (which I am assuming possibly that your grandpa's have) things are a little different in the calf aspect but to me it just seems normal.
Either way... I am glad your parents are gonna take care of the calf and that its healthy! I miss working with them... they are just adorable!

This is what we do with rejected/sick foals and it's worked for us almost everytime.
