Reflux and sleep

I brought Thomas in to the pedi the other day because I think he has reflux.  He's been up a lot at night, just grunting and grunting.  The past few nights he's been up from about 4-5am on, and the only thing that will calm him down is if he cosleeps with me.  He also spits up a ton, and he's fussy after feedings a lot.

Anyways, I got his medicine today, and he'll take it tonight before bed and hopefully it works.  For those of you with babies with reflux, did the meds help them sleep better?  He was sleeping in 3-4 hour chunks before this, I'd love to get back to that instead of sleeping next to some kind of wild animal who makes noises all night!

Re: Reflux and sleep

  • Honestly, N's sleep was/is fine even  when her reflux was at its worst.. it was just when she is awake its a problem. Honestly, Zantac was not a "miracle" drug for her.. it helped some, but she still had rough days. We just switched her to prilosec so hopefully we will see more improvement.. and I'd LOVE it if it meant she'd drop the early morning (4amish) feed all together..  Is he sleeping elevated at all? Swaddled? Natalie does okay in her crib at night as long as she is swaddled. In the day she'll only nap in her swing.

  • Noah has reflux. He slept horrible in the bassinet, even with the meds. Still spit up BAD, and was in so much pain! We got him the Fisher Price Rock'n'Play Sleeper, and it's turned his world around!! At night he rarely spits up and sleeps up to 6hrs!!! I'm sure the meds are helping, does take time, and doesn't completely stop the spitting. But the RNP really made a huge difference!!!

I hope you find something that works for your LO!

  • Reflux never really bothered Evan's sleep, but he spit up a ton...until he was one.  Zantact helped with his discomfort during the day.

For Andrew, the only thing that helped his nighttime sleep was putting him on his belly.  Once we did this, the long stretches started and now he has been sleeping 10-12 hours for about 2 months.  We got the Angelcare monitor for peace of mind.  He did not like the Rock N Play and would only sleep if he was on me on with me in bed.  Zantac has worked okay for him, but only for discomfort during feeding, not for sleeping.

Hope that you figure out what works for you :)  I think that you are BF, but if not, both boys did wonderful on Enfamil AR.
