3rd Trimester

I ate cantelope

last weekend on vacation I had some cantelope that a friend brought. I'm kind of freaked out of this listeria outbreak, especially after reading that listeria can pass to the baby and cause all kinds of problems. Not sure what to do but I'm seeing my OB tomorrow. It says symptoms of listeria can take a few weeks to a month to actually show up. Does anyone know if they can do a blood test to rule it our or anything?

Re: I ate cantelope

  • They can do a blood test (I had one).  There seems to be some debate about whether the test is actually accurate, however.

  • I'm in CO, and I know for a fact I ate two of the cantaloupes from Jensen Farms.  Basically they can't do a blood test.  They won't do any sort of testing or treatment at all unless you have symptoms.  So, you should be aware of the symptoms and if you do get any of them call your OB and make sure to mention that you had the cantaloupe.  They pulled the cantaloupe on 9/14 though so if you had it last weekend more than likely it wasn't Jensen Farms unless your friend had it in their house for a long time.

  • Scary...

I guess the advice is to also heat your cantaloupe and  eat it hot?

  • I really don't know if there's a way to tell if you have it other than waiting for the symptoms to show up.. I know they can give you antibiotics to treat it. However, I think the cantaloupe linked to the outbreak was recalled well before you ate it.

I had read that they actually didn't know where it all ended up because a lot of it was unlabled or sold through sub-distributors. You're probably right though, the risk is probably very small compared to a few weeks ago.

  • From today's CNN article:

"I?ve eaten a cantaloupe! What should I do?
Your risk of developing listeriosis is extremely low, even if the cantaloupe you ate was contaminated. If you do not have any symptoms you?re most likely in the clear. However, if you?re in one of the high risk groups and showed symptoms up to two months after eating a possibly contaminated product, contact your doctor."

  • I had no idea about this and I eat cantaloupe all the time!! I am 37 weeks and woke up feeling like I had the flu at 3:30 in the morning and I was just thinking it was a symptom of labor!

  • I ate cantaloupe all last week and finished some up earlier this week before finding out. Hopefully we are all fine but this is a bit scary! I see my OB again next so I'll mention it to her.
