A couple days shy of 27 weeks, baby is breech. When should I worry?

I went to the Dr.'s today for my appointment, and I have been lucky that I keep getting ultrasounds.  But today she mentioned how he is breech. Nothing to worry about now, but if he doesn't turn we will have to talk about turning him and other options.  Does anybody have any advice or words of wisdom for me?  This explains the constant kicks to the bladder!!!!

  • I was just in my Dr.'s for my 30th week appt and she told me the position of the baby is of no concern at this point b/c it's still turning and flipping around a lot. Which I do feel a ton of movement.

  • I wouldnt worry at all-- babies can turn at any point all the way until delivery day. Heck, sometimes babies even turn during labor. Personally, I would want to wait until at least 37+ weeks to discuss options for a breech baby. Generally your options if the baby is breech are 1) breech vaginal delivery (not commonly an option since most practioners aren't comfortable delivering this way, some are but most are not just due to lack of experience), 2) scheduled c-section (this for me personally would be my last resort, 3) external version (the dr will manually try and move the baby from the outside-- this can be somewhat painful, not always and also has risks associated. The biggest risk is generally that it will start labor-- but I've often heard of dr's giving patients an epidural before doing the version to help with any pain and that way the patient is ready to go in case there are any problems).

There are also different things you can do to try and get baby to flip as you get closer to term-- spinningbabies.com has some information that I've heard has been helpful. But again, I wouldn't worry at 27 weeks-- little peanut still has PLENTY of time and space to move around!

  • FWIW, I was one of those baby's that flipped around right up until the minute of delivery. My mom was told, "well, we're going to have to do a c/s since your baby has decided to flip around again." They started getting everything in order for it, checked her one last time, & I had flipped into correct position. Like PP said, babies can move around up until delivery day. Try not to worry(I know it's hard)

  • My baby is breeched too.  The only problem it poses for you now is that his head can go under your ribs and that's not very comfortable for you!  Don't worry about him being breeched for another 10 weeks or so.

  • Most doctors don't start to let the position of the baby become a factor until about 36 weeks or so. At this point, your baby still has lots of room to turn and roll around. I wouldn't stress about it right now.

  • I was just at my OB today and asked him about this. He told me that he wouldn't even start to be concerned untill 35 weeks and even then the baby can flip or can be fliped. He said that if I was still breach at 35 he would look again at 37 and 39 then we would have to discuss c-section options.

Dont stress it will be okayWink

  • Im 30 weeks and my ultrasound last week showed Little Lady was breech :) ... my doc said they would check again at 34-36 weeks - if still breech if I was interested they could try to turn her from the outside (relax my uterus and then all hands on try to turn her every way possible from the outside - she would be monitored the whole time to check for stress) .. but that only works about 40-50% time and 20% of those babies go back to being breech

If I dont want to try that then she recommended some old wives tales - otherwise my only option is to schedule a csection for 39 weeks because the Naval Hospital will not attempt a vaginal delivery if the baby is breech for a variety of reasons ...

Our little lady has been breech since week 20 ... lol she kicks and punches a LOT but isnt interested in moving her tush from the birth canal ... sometimes its just where their comfort it

Hang in there - I am in the same boat!

  • My baby is head down, but I asked the doctor yesterday how likely it is that she could be breech. He said it's not very likely and there's not that much room in there for her to turn around at this point.

  • Another option besides external version is chiropractic work and acupuncture. My midwives swear by both for their patients who have breech babies-just find someone who specializes in working with breech babies.

There is totally time foryour LO to flip, but I would explore my options to make sure I'm ready in case LO didn't flip.

  • Mine is finally head down at almost 30 weeks. My midwife said that if a baby is head down by 32 weeks, it's pretty likely they'll stay that way for the rest of the pregnancy. My practice does breech vaginal delivery if the circumstances are optimal for it, so even if this baby decided to flip, it won't mean automatic C-section decision for me.

I wouldn't worry.... mine was either transverse or breech (it switched a lot) until recently. I started doing the inversion techniques on spinningbabies.com to get the baby to quit laying so low, and it worked so well that the baby flipped.

  • I just went for my thrid ultra sound Monday...I'm 28 weeks and little baby Mason is breech.  I'm not worried there is plenty of time for him to turn.  My Dr. isnt worried either.  Good luck to you!!
