High blood pressure

My last appt. I had high blood pressure, the nurse had me lay on my left side and retook it and it went down to normal. My dr. also sent me into get bloodwork just to b on the safe side. I have never had any issues with blood pressure up until now. Just wondering if anyone else has gone through something similar?

Re: High blood pressure

  • Me!  My BP has always been borderline high when I go to the doctor, though they have credited it to "white coat syndrome" because I can usually relax myself down.  At my appointment yesterday though they got 2 high readings in a row with the automatic machine, so the nurse took it by hand and it was back in my normal range.  My OB decided to send me for a pre-e screening just to have a baseline, so I had bloodwork done and have to do the awesome 24 hour urine catch today.  My DH thought I had lost it when I pulled out the funnel thing and giant orange pee container, I was laughing so hard!!  I have a follow up appt next week, hoping everything comes back okay!

  • Mine is high usually due to white coat syndrome like PP said.  I did the pre-e screening and it came back fine.  Good luck!

  • Mine's been high at the Dr.'s Office and fine at home. They've done every test possible for me, sent me to a specialist, 24 hour urine, etc. and so far no Pre-E (knock on wood). They are talking about inducing me around week 38-39 though just to be on the safe side. Hopefully yours is nothing major too.

  • I have chronic high blood pressure that started a few years back - it isn't extremely high, but they choose to control it with medication because I also only have one kidney.  My BP has been fine this entire pregnancy and then went up at my appointment at last week's appointment and my 24 hr urine showed I was spilling protein in my urine - though not enough to be diagnosed pre-e.  They're inducing me tonight, though, so it really isn't something to fool with.

I hope yours is just white coat syndrome!

  • Thanks to everyone for ur responses. I have never heard of white coat syndrome, I am gonna research that. I also looked at pre/e last night, that freaked me out. If they haven't said anything bout additional protein in urine, think it is safe to say pre-e is ruled out?

Your bp can jump up for any number of reasons - stress getting to the appointment, what you ate, etc.  So I would think one high reading does not mean pre-e.  I would just ask at your next appointment, just in case.

Even with my high bp, at my appointment when they dipped my urine sample it must not have been very positive (the doc didn't mention it), but by the time I did the 24 hr urine the next day, there was definitely protein in my sample.

They look for a few different things/signs/symptoms, but I would imagine they would have told you if you are "spilling protein" as they say. If they were really concerned about it, you would know. They think my increased BP is White Coat Syndrome/stress related. My Drs. said the problem is that if my body is responding that way to the stress of being there, it is probably doing the same thing in traffic, at work, etc., when I am stressed out and high BP, regardless of the origin ages the placenta more quickly which is why they prefer to induce before your due date. So, even if you don't have Pre-E, they may want to go ahead and induce you a little early anyway. I guess it depends on your practice. I wouldn't get too freaked out about it from one reading, but monitor it at home if you can and keep a log so you can share it with them at your next appointment.

  • At my appointment on Tuesday, I had the exact same thing happen to me.  My BP was high, so I had to give an actual urine sample.  Normally, I just have to pee on this little test stick.  The doctor said I only had trace amounts of protein in my urine, and it wasn't anything to be worried about.  They had me lay on my left side for about 10 minutes and then retook my BP.  It had gone down and was completely normal.  My doctor told me that he wants me to lay on my left side as much as possible when I am at home to help naturally stabilize my BP.
  • The same thing happened to me last Wednesday at my appointment. The bloodwork came back fine showing no pre-e, thank goodness. The odd thing is that my BP is normally awesome and that was the first time it was weird. My doctor had me monitor my BP at home and it was normal everytime. So yesterday when it was kind of weird again, it surprised me. My mom (nurse) said it was white coat syndrome which I find odd because it has only happened these last two times. I wonder if it has anything with the way I am sitting being this far along and having to wait a little longer for my doctor.

  • I had HBP back in June, so I had bloodwork done.  It came back normal, so the doctors didn't do anything at that point.  It went way up again between my 36w and 37 w appointments, so I had more bloodwork done, plus an NST.  This time around, they discovered I had thrombocytopenia.  The baby is fine, but they're concerned about me, so they decided to induce me tomorrow.

  • I've never had BP issues either and it was up at my 35 week appointment. Freaked me out when the doc said he was concerned about pre/e and told me to rest and take it easy for the week. That just made me worry more--I followed his orders, though, and didn't lift a finger for a week and at the next appt my BP was back to normal. I think it was just up because of rushing to the appointment and maybe stress at work. I am still taking it easy, propping up my feet and everything...nice & easy until the lil guy gets here! I suggest you do the same :)

  • I started showing some high blood pressure readings at the doctor's office around 26 weeks, and I went back at 28 weeks for another check. My bp was even higher. I was sent for testing and pre-e labs and everything came back normal. My bp stayed relatively high, but jumped up again around 34 weeks, and I was sent for another set of pre-e labs. I was hospitalized for about 36 hours for monitoring and diagnosed with mild pre-e. I was sent home on bed rest. I've been going in for twice weekly nsts and once weekly ultrasounds. I had an ultrasound on tuesday that showed borderline amniotic fluid levels, and so I'm having another one tomorrow. If my amniotic fluid levels are still low, then they'll probably go ahead and deliver her.
