RP A mystery (CD users)

I posted this over at the CD board but I also wanted you opinion...

LO isn't sleeping long stretches, the most 4 hours but even if he wakes up after 2 he has leaked. I'm tired of changing his diaper and pj's, swaddle, sheet...every time he wakes up! I've used BGs stuffed with 2 BG inserts, I've put in a trifolded PF (this holds better) and he still leaks. The best option has been a fitted and cover, he won't leak then but I feel bad that he's so soaking wet when I change him and sometimes he gets a bit of prickly heat if left wet for long (by long I mean about 6 hours). DH said "maybe you are not pointing his pecker down", I tried that, and he still leaks. I know there's gotta be something wrong either with what I'm doing or with the BGs or GroVias because when I take his diaper sometimes the insert is not soaked all the way, sooo it's not a case of an extremely heavy wetter. I don't think it's a fit issue because there is not gapping around his legs, and I make sure it's tight around his waist. Oh, I almost forgot to mention he's always wet on the same spot, from the waist on his left side.

Please help me solve the mystery. Like I said I don't think it's a heavy wetting problem and it's not like he's left with same CD for 12 hours. I thought about trying a night time option like the Kawaiis heavy wetters which was rec'd to me but since it's a pocket I'm afraid I'll have the same issue. Would I be better off buying some wool soakers? What kind of fitted would I have to use with a soaker? TIA for replying!

  • Are you sure you aren't having repelling issues? What is your wash routine?

That would be my first guess too.  I think it's about time for me to strip mine again.

Does LO lay on his side or anything that could contribute to the one spot being super wet?

  • I'd strip everything (wash with 1 tsp Dawn if you have an HE machine, 1 tbsp in a top loader, add a few extra rinses at the end). Then I'd dry your covers on hot for 20-30 minutes to try to reseal the PUL - I've had some of mine occasionally leak through the laundry tabs, and a trip through the dryer seems to solve it. I've had better luck using a microfiber + a hemp than 2 microfiber - that makes it too big and it gaps and leaks.

  • I'd strip them.  DD can go 12 hours overnight in a BG with two big MF inserts or a BG with a hemp insert, MF insert, and MF doubler.  What detergent do you use?  Perhaps it's causing build-up that is making your diapers repel.

  • Also, after about 6 months of using MF, I ditched it completely in favor of hemp. I had so many issues with MF, repelling being one.  I've never had an issue with hemp. Ever.

Maybe. I use Thirsties detergent, and I don't like it, it feels like it doesn't do anything. I rinse in cold water, then hot wash with 1/2 oz detergent as instructed on the bottle, then a cold rinse with vinegar. I have a top loader so I add the vinegar to the cup in the middle for softener.

No, we still swaddle so he's on his back and he doesn't move at all.

I'm going to do that, thanks. Do I dry the covers separately or with everything and take them out after 30 min?

  • I'd just put it on hot for the first half hour, and then turn it back to medium until it's done. I'm not sure what your usual drying routine is (I've been hanging everything to dry most of the summer, and I do think most stuff benefits from the occasional tumble).
  • Definitely strip and rinse, rinse, rinse with hot water until no bubbles are left. Agree with Token about overstuffing, as well. If you have hard water, you'll want to skip the vinegar rinse. It's great, in theory, but with hard water will contribute to build up and cause your repelling issues/ make them worse. Invest in a good cloth diaper safe washing *soda*... Great for hard water. I was also concerned about having DS sitting in a soaked dipe all night, so we bought some fleece for liners so he'll feel dry. Good luck!

  • Steph, I'm still curious what your wash routine is like. That might help us understand your "washer" too :)
