Vent about DH's work

So DH is a restaurant manager (I wish he could change careers but would never suggest now with LO so close to being here and the job market so horrible).  He is obviously required to work most weekends.  When we found out we were pregnant, he gave his boss a warning (like in April) that October was probably going to be a month he would have to take some weekend time off - for childbirth classes and other baby related things.  He puts in his October request for days off 3 weeks ago - our 2 day childbirth class, 1 end of the season bbq his friend is having, and to not close this coming saturday because of a friend's surprise 30th party.

His boss schedules him to work EVERY day he requested off.  And his response?  Well, those are a lot of weekend days....

Forget that 3 weeks ago when we had Hurricane Irene and everyone lost power except their restaurant, DH worked his tail off, covering extra shifts because one of the other managers was lucky enough to be on vacation for the whole ordeal, and he NEVER takes time off....

He managed to switch shifts for most of them, but it was like his boss didn't even LOOK at his request before doing the schedule.

Anyone know a field he would be able to switch into that would be slightly more than entry level pay that doesn't require a bachelor's degree?

Re: Vent about DH's work

  • He could work in a warehouse, my husband does that makes decent $/hr in our area it's actually considered better than average for no degree.

We live in a SMALL area in central Ohio, and he makes 15.88/hr with pretty much unlimited OT.  He drives a forklift.  He loves the machines and really enjoys what he does.

The only downside is a lot of distribution centers, manufacturing facilities, places of this nature operate on more than one shift... which means for a while you guys may be on different shifts, but that could actually save you money on child care... just a thought.

Good luck, I'm sorry his boss is such an ahole. =)

  • UPS!  They start you off low, but their promotions schedule is pretty darn quick!  A buddy of mine started there about two years ago and is now making a decent wage with benefits and going to school (tuition reimbursment)...  They are very big on "hiring from within" so that all of their management level positions are filled by people who worked their way up the system in order to know the system.
