Swollen foot (PIP)

My left foot is so swollen, it barely goes down at night, also I have almost no sensation in it if I touch it.

Should I call my OB? The ankle has been swollen for about 1 week, the foot itself has been swollen for 2 days.

Re: Swollen foot (PIP)

  • oh dear the swollen foot.  I had this with DS.  the doc told me that it meant the baby was resting more on one side of my body than the other.  at this point you would probably be close to your every 2 week checkup, so you could probably just ask at your next visit.

  • That does not look comfortable! I'm sure it's probably normal, but can't hurt to call and just double check that your blood pressure and everything is normal. I hope you get some relief soon!

  • I've been getting the same thing for the last week.  I was told not to worry about it, but mine does go down at night.  Maybe give them a call?  I know they can give you a water pill to help reduce swelling/water retention.

  • Swelling in extremities can indicate a blood pressure problem and even pre-e, so I'd definitely call my doc. Better safe than sorry.
  • Have you ever had it swell, even a little before being pregnant? My left foot swells much worse than my right foot, but I had noticed it swelling a little LAST summer when it was hot out and I wasn't pregnant. I mentioned it to my doctor and he said that it just meant that my circulation on the left leg wasn't as good as on the right. He said that if it ever got to the point that it DIDN'T go down at night I needed to let him know asap to get it looked at any make sure there wasn't anything like blood clots forming. The only thing I've found that help is wearing sneakers from morning til night. The pressure on my foot helps prevent the build up of fluid and keeps the swelling to an absolute bare minimum.

  • I would call...especially if it's not going down at night.

I was swelling on the left more than the right but it went down with rest.

This, especially if it came all of a sudden and never goes down.  If you've tried putting your feet up in the evenings and it's never getting better, I'd probably call.  Sorry Mye, looks like it sucks big time.

  • This happened both of my last pregnancies.  I was told to keep my feet up for at least 6 hours a day.  Not just off my feet but up above your heart.  Drink more fluids also.  I was also told that its because baby is resting more on one side than the other.  But if I didn't mind her modified bedrest full bedrest was in my future.  GL

  • OB said to keep bedrest on the weekend with the foot over the heart, but he wanted to check for a blood cloth which it doesnt appear to be, if it doesnt get better he wants me to go to the ER and get a scan
  • eek that looks really uncomfortable, hope they get it figured out and you can get some relief.
